Randomness Ensues

You Too, Can Get Noticed In The Senpai Club

It seems to be a simple fact of shoujo anime life. Every girl, at some point or another, gets noticed by her senpai. It is on that day that she enters into a contract to fight witches as a magical girl.

Wait… that’s Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Joking aside, Senpai Club is a three-part series by YouTuber makebabi.es that gleefully lampoons every trope and tradition in the shoujo genre. Popular visual gags, from the popular “toast in mouth” shot, to the pretty boy glamour pose, are presented in the most absurd manner possible. The plot is a gaggle of spoofs of popular shows like Ouran High School Host Club and Kodocha, and the cast is comprised of over-the-top parodies of popular archetypes. Everybody, from the everyday “normal girl” main character to the countless pretty boy tropes, seems to find its way into the feature in some way or another.

The kicker, though, is that the series’ dialogue is delivered in amateurish, clumsy Japanese. The awkward pronunciations and unusual delivery help to sell the atmosphere of the shorts, though the subtitles are simply divine.

Senpai Club is a parody that is silly and cheesy by design. It uses its concept, and the sheer camp to create an enjoyable experience that can be enjoyed by veterans and new fans alike.
