Production I.G. Acquires FLCL, Plans Anime Remake

FLCL Visual 001 - 20150831This news came out of nowhere, like a Blues Drive Monster!

On Friday, Production I.G. announced that they acquired the rights to 2000 OVA FLCL. The series, which was a co-production between Production I.G. and Gainax, was purchased from their former partner on the project. The studio plans to take advantage of the rights to produce a “new anime remake,” among other ventures.

FLCL was a six-episode OVA, which was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion). The series featured scripts by Yoji Enokido (Gunbuster 2: Diebuster, Ouran High School Host Club, Revolutionary Girl Utena), and a soundtrack featuring songs by The Pillows.

The series was originally released in North America by Synch-Point in 2002. The series gained mainstream fan appeal in 2003, when it aired on Adult Swim.

FUNimation acquired the rights to FLCL in January 2010, and released the series on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2011.

FLCL is currently available for free streaming in its entirety on YouTube, Hulu, and FUNimation’s streaming service. As always, the streams are limited to North American viewers.
