AniWeekly 95: A Super Celebration!

Welcome, readers, to AniWeekly, hot and ready for your entertainment! This week, we’d like to take a few moments to wish a happy 25th anniversary to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo’s influential grey box hit retailers in the United States on August 23, 1991 with a $199 price tag (That’s about $351.61 with today’s buying power). The system was bundled with Super Mario World, which introduced loveable green dinosaur Yoshi to the world, and offered a varied launch lineup that included:

  • F-Zero
  • Pilotwings
  • SimCity
  • Gradius III

It was a truly evolutionary console that ushered in classics like Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The system and continues to be a fan favorite even today. Happy birthday, Super NES. Here’s hoping countless others find your fantastic library as time goes on.

I’m turning Japanese, I think I’m turning Japanese, I really think so! Justin at The OASG published a fantastic article that should speak to anybody seeking to learn Japanese. He reached out to several translators in the industry to learn just how they got started down the road of learning the language. It’s a pretty enviable lineup, packed with names like Michelle Tymon, Adrienne Beck, and Amanda Haley.

Now you’re playing with power! Super power! In honor of the Super NES’s 25th anniversary, we’re here with three short videos from the console’s early life. The first is an early commercial for the system featuring a “before he was famous Paul Rudd.”

The second, an ad for classic Squaresoft/Nintendo collaboration Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Finally, we’re taking a look at the other side of the story, the parents’ side. A local news piece shone a less-than-flattering light on gaming, as parents angsted over the sharp costs of a brand new console generation.

Sadly, the station had to be jerks and totally spoil the ending for Super Mario World, but I digress.
