Makoto Shinkai’s “Your Name.” Grosses Over 10 Billion Yen In Ticket Sales

Kimi no Na wa Visual 001 - 20160607Your name is… a massive freaking hit!

As of Thursday, Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name. (Kimi no Na wa.) grossed over 10 billion yen ($98,976,582.14 USD) in ticket sales. The film has sold over 7.7 million tickets since it debuted on August 26, and ranked at #1 for its first four weeks.

Your Name. is the first anime film to break 10 billion yen in ticket sales since 2013’s The Wind Rises. More notable, though, is that Your Name. is the first anime film to ever earn 10 billion yen that wasn’t produced by Studio Ghibli or directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

To date, the only films to break the 10 billion yen milestone are:

  • Princess Mononoke (1997, ¥14.5 billion)
  • Spirited Away (2001, ¥30.4 billion)
  • Howl’s Moving Castle (2004, ¥23.2 billion)
  • Ponyo (2008, ¥15.0 billion)
  • The Wind Rises (2013, ¥11.6 billion)
  • Your Name. (2016, ¥10 billion)

Your Name. is an original film from Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices),who directed the feature at CoMix Wave Films. Shinkai also penned the script, while Masayoshi Tanaka (anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, High School of the Dead) provided character designs. Masashi Ando (Spirited Away, Paprika) served as animation director on the project.

The film made its global theatrical début on July 3, at Anime Expo.

Funimation currently holds the domestic rights to Your Name.
