Crunchyroll Unveils Winners In Their First Anime Awards


The votes have been cast, and the polls have closed. At least this time around, we don’t have to stay up until 3AM waiting for precincts reporting in!

Earlier today, Crunchyroll announced the winners in their first-ever Anime Awards. Thirteen award categories have been announced, with “Anime of the Year” being unveiled later in the month.

The list of winners is as follows:

Hero of the Year

  • Winner: Izuku “Deku” Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
  • Runner Up: Satoru Fujinuma (ERASED)
  • Most Popular Write-In: Josuke Higashikata (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable)

Villain of the Year

  • Winner: Gaku Yashiro (ERASED)
  • Runner Up: Yoshikage Kira (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
  • Most Popular Write-In: Betelgeuse (Re:Zero)

Best Boy

  • Winner: Yuri Katsuki (Yuri!!! On ICE)
  • Runner Up: Arataka Reigen (Mob Psycho 100)
  • Most Popular Write-In: Josuke Higashikata (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable)

Best Girl

  • Winner: Rem (Re:Zero)
  • Runner Up: Ochako Uraraka (My Hero Academia)
  • Most Popular Write-In: Megumin (Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!)

Best Fight Scene

  • Winner: Shigeo vs. Koyama (Mob Psycho 100, Episode 8)
  • Runner Up: Deku va. Kacchan (My Hero Academia, Episode 7)
  • Most Popular Write-In: Naruto vs. Sasuke (Naruto Shippuden)

Best Animation

  • Winner: Yuri!!! On ICE

Most Heartwarming Scene

  • Winner: ERASED

Crunchyroll will host a live event on January 28 to unveil the “Anime of the Year” winner. More than 400 industry experts, fans, and influencers are expected to attend the event at San Francisco’s Folsom Street Foundry. Planned festivities for the event include a live DJ, anime screenings, video game lounges, and custom T-shirt printing.

Details on how fans can attend the event in-person will be announced in January. Those who can’t attend will be able to view the show live on Crunchyroll’s YouTube page.
