Funimation Releases Outlaw Star In June 2017

Finally, Gene Starwind and the crew of the Outlaw Star can cruise the starry skies once again.

Yesterday, Funimation released their June 2017 release slate. Among the numerous releases, which include Code Geass: Akito the Exiled and a re-release of Ping Pong the Animation, is a new listing for classic anime series Outlaw Star.

Outlaw Star will hit retailers on June 13 as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack. Both standard and Collector’s editions are planned. The Standard Edition will carry a suggested price of $64.98, while the Collector’s Edition will cost $99.98.

The confirmed extra features include:

  • Pilot Video
  • Trailer
  • Commercial Collection
  • Textless Opening & Closing Songs
  • Trailers
  • Metallic Chipboard Box (Collector’s Edition Only)
  • 100-page Artbook (Collector’s Edition Only)

Outlaw Star is based on Takehiko Itō’s manga series of the same name. Mitsuru Hongo (Sakura Wars: The Movie, Shamanic Princess) directed the show, which aired in the Winter 1998 broadcast season, at Sunrise. Takuya Saito (Macross Zero, Monster Hunter Stories RIDE ON) provided character designs for the project, with Hajime Yatate (Sunrise’s collective staff pseudonym) writing the story. Kô Ôtani (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, You’re Under Arrest!) scored the title’s soundtrack.

Bandai Entertainment originally released Outlaw Star on VHS and DVD in North America. Funimation describes the series as:

Gene Starwind is a jack-of-all-trades responsible for odd jobs and bounty hunting with his partner, Jim Hawking. Stuck on a rundown planet, he’s going nowhere fast. But when a bodyguard job goes sideways, he finds himself the proud owner of the Outlaw Star and on an adventure to find the mysterious Galactic Leyline. Facing pirates and dangers galore, can he survive the journey through space?
