GLOBAL YAOI MANGA PUBLISHER SuBLime LAUNCHES THE NEW SERIES BLUE MORNING

Courtly Intrigue Between A Noble Family’s Capable Butler And His Young Charge Offers A Tender Story Of The Conflict Between What Duty Demands And What The Heart Desires

San Francisco, CA, May 16, 2013 – SuBLime, the global yaoi manga (graphic novel) publishing initiative between VIZ Media and Japan’s Animate, Ltd. (Animate), delivers an intriguing new series about aristocratic drama and the intricate relationship between the loyal butler of a noble family and a young heir he is duty-bounty to look after in the print debut of BLUE MORNING, by creator Shoko Hidaka. The new manga (graphic novel) series launched on May 14th, is rated M’ for Mature Audiences, and will carry an MSRP of $12.99 U.S. / $14.99 CAN.

At only ten years of age, Akihito Kuze suddenly inherits the Kuze viscountship after his father’s death. The family’s capable butler, Tomoyuki Katsuragi, takes over the task of raising the boy, serving as his tutor and mentor. However, the handsome and intelligent Katsuragi, well respected even among the aristocracy, remains cool towards his charge. Akihito finds himself relentlessly drawn to Katsuragi, frustrated by the distance between them and driven to discover the reasons why.

“Young Akihito Kuze is destined for nobility, but he first must learn to navigate and grapple with what his butler Katsuragi and society want in a person of high position and what Akihito wants for himself,” says Jennifer LeBlanc, Editor, SuBLime. “As Akihito stands on the brink of manhood, he realizes he is in love. Fans won’t want to miss the tender drama of BLUE MORNING about the conflicts between what duty demands and what the heart desires!”

So, on Thursday, May 23, we’ll be going dark for the evening.  No new content (aside from press releases) will be posted, and we’ll be treating it as a night off to check and double-check our supplies, and finish editing our materials. I want to thank you in advance for your patience.

FUNimation’s Scott Porter To Stream One Piece Marathon http://www.animeherald.com/press-releases/funimation-scott-porter-to-live-stream-one-piece-marathon/ http://www.animeherald.com/press-releases/funimation-scott-porter-to-live-stream-one-piece-marathon/#comments Wed, 15 May 2013 17:21:01 +0000 Mike Ferreira http://www.animeherald.com/?post_type=pressrelease&p=5852 Marooned on One Piece Island

Tuesday May 14, 2013

We at FUNimation try to create new and exciting ways to get you all closer and more involved with the anime you love. We think this event might be our craziest yet.

OnePiecePublicity_001_20130515

With One Piece returning to Toonami this Saturday at 1:30 am ET, we wanted to do something over the top to celebrate its return.

So starting at 5pm CT today our ‘host with the most’ from The FUNimation Show, Scott Porter, will be locked in a room at the FUNimation office and will not be let back out until he has watched every episode of One Piece up to episode #207, where Toonami is starting off on Saturday.

OnePiecePublicity_002_20130515

Yes, that will take the rest of the week (until late Saturday actually). Yes, we know it’s insane – that’s why it’s awesome!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYYeAyPjtiQ&feature=player_embedded

We will have a live stream over at our FUNimation Live YouTube page of Scott locked in the room watching One Piece going 24-hours a day. The camera will even be going when he sleeps*. He will be interacting with all of you via our the live stream chat and our other social sites.

There will also be a chance to win One Piece prizes throughout the broadcast, so be sure to stay tuned to FUNimation.com/news and all the FUNimation social sites for updates.

*We are letting him sleep (a little) during this event since otherwise this could kill him or at the very least mess him up so much that he won’t be able to tell the difference between a glass of water and a penguin.

Anime Is Love: A Talk With Daisuki’s Eri Maruyama http://www.animeherald.com/interviews/anime-is-love-a-talk-with-daisukis-eri-maruyama/ http://www.animeherald.com/interviews/anime-is-love-a-talk-with-daisukis-eri-maruyama/#comments Wed, 15 May 2013 04:05:18 +0000 Mike Ferreira http://www.animeherald.com/?post_type=interview&p=5846 Over the past two months, we’ve heard rumblings of a new service known as “Daisuki.”  We’ve heard many details arise since the unveiling, such as the fact that it’s a joint venture between numerous anime production companies, including Aniplex, Sunrise, Toei Animation, TMS Entertainment, Nihon Ad Systems (NAS), Dentsu, and Asatsu-DK . However, there are still questions that remain unanswered, and many details that people are dying to know.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to get in contact with Eri Maruyama, from the company’s International Business Development division. And, through our conversation, she revealed several interesting tidbits about Daisuki as a whole, and the company’s overall strategy in the anime market.

I’d like to thank Maruyama-san for taking the time to answer our questions.

Anime Herald: Daisuki is an interesting name for the organization. It just (literally) screams “I love you!” What led to your decision to use this, and do you feel the brand is one that will attract customers outside of the core anime audience?

Eri Maruyama: We thought that “DAISUKI” sounds catchy and can be memorized by fans from different countries easily. It is a Japanese vocabulary that many foreign Anime fans are familiar with while not being difficult to pronounce. So, we think the name is suitable for core fans as well as those who are not (or not yet). We hope that fans from all over the world will “daisuki” our service!

Anime Herald: How do you plan to get Daisuki’s name out to the masses? What steps do you plan to take to bring customers to your service?

Eri Maruyama: We will start off with a launching campaign. Also, we are planning to participate in major Anime conventions with a DAISUKI exhibition booth to reach to local fans directly.

Anime Herald: What is the company’s mission? What do you plan to bring to the market as a whole through Daisuki, and where do you see the company in three years?

Eri Maruyama: The main purpose of DAISUKI is to provide legal material to overseas fans. In the last years, legal sites have increased. But DAISUKI is the first service coming directly from Japan. Japanese companies and productions wants to provide their content more directly to the fans. This would be the second mission of DAISUKI: to build a bridge between creators and producers in Japan and Anime fans from all over the world.

Let’s see, in three years… hopefully every Anime fan knows about “DAISUKI”. Ideally, DAISUKI has become the No. 1 stop to watch Japanese Anime content for many Anime fans all over the world.

Anime Herald: What is Daisuki’s target demographic?

Eri Maruyama: Anime fans from all over the world outside Japan! : ) To be more precisely, the main target will be English spoken areas since the language (subtitles) we will offer in the first time will be English only.

Anime Herald: Will Daisuki be available in other North American countries, like Canada or Mexico? Are there plans to make Daisuki available in European countries?

Eri Maruyama: DAISUKI.net will be available world-wide. Some titles and content may be not viewable from some countries though, due to regional rights. This will depend on the title/country but basically, the website and also the web-store will be available world-wide.

Anime Herald: Aside from streaming, what services will you to your prospective market? What value will customers find in Daisuki that they won’t find elsewhere?

Eri Maruyama: There will be a DAISUKI web-store where fans can purchase limited official items, only available at DAISUKI store. Also, thanks to our direct connections to the productions we will be able to provide exclusive footage like making-of material or video messages from creators and voice actors.

Anime Herald: In previous interviews and news reports, it was indicated that Daisuki is working directly with licensees for titles that are already streaming on sites like Crunchyroll, Hulu, and FUNimation. How would you say working with these groups has been? Is there anything you’ve learned from them that has led to improvements in your overall operation?

Eri Maruyama: There has been no direct cooperation yet but we hope to create a good relationship with all legal sites to contribute to the Anime culture. Also do we do not aim to get exclusive users for DAISUKI, so for example sites that are already streaming a title which will be streamed on DAISUKI too, may continue their streaming service.

Anime Herald: Anime News Network reported that Daisuki plans to sell tie-in goods for relevant shows through the site itself. What types of goods do you plan to offer, and will you be pursuing other forms of revenue generation going forward? Will you be offering exclusives to a particular market (e.g. items only available in America, or the like), or Daisuki-exclusive merchandise?

Eri Maruyama:We hope to provide many exclusive products at our DAISUKI store. Soon we may be able to announce the first ones officially. Regarding the revenue generation: The streaming itself will be for free.

Anime Herald: Looking to the more distant future, do you have plans to expand your offerings to titles that aren’t specifically anime but may hold interest to anime fans, such as live-action manga adaptations or offbeat “special interest” titles like Game Center CX?

Eri Maruyama: There are no particular plans we can present at that point, but yes, we are planning to introduce content that is not specifically anime. What we are thinking about in the near future is Game-related and Anime Music-related content.

Anime Herald: What is it that you’d like to change most about the anime industry through Daisuki?

Eri Maruyama: We hope to introduce the Japanese anime culture to a world-wide audience. While doing so providing legal material is important for us. Piracy is a grave problem since studios and creators do not get their revenue, do not get what they deserve. In the long term they won’t be able to create great new content anymore. It’s a threatening danger for the future of Japan’s anime culture. We hope to change this vicious circle, and we believe that fans will pick the legal option under similar conditions.

Anime Sols Brings Crowd Funding To Anime Fans http://www.animeherald.com/2013/05/13/anime-sols-brings-crowd-funding-to-anime-fans/ http://www.animeherald.com/2013/05/13/anime-sols-brings-crowd-funding-to-anime-fans/#comments Tue, 14 May 2013 04:24:33 +0000 Mike Ferreira http://www.animeherald.com/?p=5827 Anime Sols LogoIn the online world, we’re beginning to see a shift in the way people shop online. In addition to the standard retailers like Amazon and Right Stuf, a new niche has grown that places the customer in a different situation. This new model, known as crowd funding, places customers in the role of the investor, as they put their money where their mouths are.

In a crowd funding model, the customer makes a promise to pay a certain amount of funding into a project, be it a film,an album, or even a product, given that project crosses a certain funding thresholds. Often, these investments are tied to rewards, which include anything from shirts, to silly thank you letters, to the products themselves. If the goal isn’t met, the project doesn’t receive anything, and the customer doesn’t pay a dime from his own pockets. However, this insurance comes at a cost – if the project becomes a success, no matter how massive, the crowd funders are not entitled to a cut of the profits. Likewise, if the people working on a project go bust before it hits market, the customer is out of his investment with nothing gained.

Since the advent of platforms like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, we’ve seen this model take off. The response has been especially bright in the gaming industry, where indie developers take their concepts to the masses, in order to escape the shackles of a larger publisher. Unique products like the Oculus Rift, and the Sprizzi drink machine have become realities, and success stories appear to be bubbling to the surface every other week.

It was only a matter of time before this model extended to the anime world. With thousands demanding titles that are either out of production, or “too risky” to license, it’s not surprising that we’d eventually see some enterprising organization see if people would put their money where their mouths are.

AnimeSols 001Last year, we began to hear rumblings about Anime Sols, a joint venture between several Japanese anime companies. The list of investors was impressive, with companies like Tezuka Productions, Studio Pierrot, and Yomiuri TV confirmed to be on-board. However, much about it remained shrouded in mystery, until the chatter eventually died out, and most forgot about its existence.

Earlier today, Anime Sols opened its doors to the public, offering their own take on the crowd funding model. The site features dozens of free streaming episodes from eight titles:

  • 24 Hour TV Specials
  • Black Jack
  • Blue Blink
  • Creamy Mami
  • New Yatterman
  • Tekkaman
  • Tobikage
  • Yatterman

And, while each title features full episodes for free viewing, the video pages contain the typical “Kickstarter-esque” layout, with funding and backing information adorning the right side. The tiers, which begin at $5, and go as high as $2,500 in some cases, contain various rewards, from a guaranteed DVD boxed set, to dinner with the show’s producer. the funding goals, as one would expect, range from about $16,000 to a higher end of $22,000.

AnimeSols 002While the site itself looks dated beyond belief and even the site’s FAQ is still MIA, the service itself is proving to be promising. A number of shows are already seeing several hundred dollars in initial donations, an there is a definite interest that seems to be spreading through the Twitter and Facebook channels. However, some have already begun to find potential caveats to pledging in the service’s terms of service. Specifically, the following line:

Once a pledge is made, cancellation of that pledge is possible only at the sole discretion of Anime Sols.

This goes against the grain set by many crowd-funding sites, which allow for users to back out as needed. And, as one would expect, it is causing a bit of unease among a number of potential funders.

Personally, I’m curious about how Anime Sols will fare as a player in the market. At the moment, they have the novelty of being the first anime crowd funding site, and the only licensed provider of titles like Creamy Mami. the service’s real test will begin once the first funding drives begin to end. As one may notice, Anime Sols features zero advertisements at the moment. And, outside of some crazy promotional deals, bandwidth isn’t free. So, with this in mind, the company’s current model hinges entirely on the pledge drives. Barring the addition of advertisements or a subscription model in the future, Anime Sols will need to earn enough money to pay for the rewards, the company’s employees, and the server fees via the good graces of customers working on the “pay what you want” model.

It’s a gutsy move, for sure. The risks of failure in such a model are incredibly high, as it requires a trusting and willing customer-base in order to even consider pledging money with a product so far off. And, since the company is the new kid on the block, they have much to prove. Personally, a part of me hopes the service takes off. The model’s success would open the door to an incredible alternative consumer market, with the potential to reach far beyond the normal scope of anime. We could see releases of titles that were mainstream hits once thought to be lost to the sands of time, like Shounen Mowgli: The Jungle Book (which aired on Canadian television), or SF Saiyuki (which aired as Spaceketeers). It would allow for customers looking for that long-lost childhood classic to finally obtain a copy, or for long-time watchers to discover new shows to enjoy. Frankly speaking, if Anime Sols takes off, and does its job well, then everybody will win in some form or another.

So, readers, what are your thoughts on this new player in the market? Share and comment with your views!

A Need To Break The Cycle http://www.animeherald.com/2013/05/09/a-need-to-break-the-cycle/ http://www.animeherald.com/2013/05/09/a-need-to-break-the-cycle/#comments Fri, 10 May 2013 03:48:54 +0000 Mike Ferreira http://www.animeherald.com/?p=5817 Nami ThinkingAs many of you know, Anime Boston is a scant two weeks away. Through Memorial Day weekend, thousands of eager fans will flood the streets of Boston surrounding the Hynes. Normally, at this time of year, I wax poetic about the joys of con season, and the slowdown of news that comes with the wait.

And, every year, I realize that this is little more than a holding pattern that most people will pass by without much thought.

While the sentiment is true, the post tends to arise because, quite honestly, news at this time of year is freaking boring. Barring a major reveal like, say, 2006′s hacking of ADV Films’s website or 2010′s 4Kids stock delisting, much of this time of year is a scramble to find something, anything to cover. Unfortunately, this leads to numerous dry, dull posts that seem to have little life behind them.

Rather than try to continue re-wrapping this sappy, sentimental yapping, I’d like to take a chance to actually engage you, dear readers, in discussions. I’d like to create content that inspires you to look further into how the hobby works. You deserve better than the average chatter, and I feel that I shouldn’t be content with just the status quo.

There are many anime sites out there, and I want to give you a reason to look forward visiting us, above all others.

Eisner Award-Winning Creator Offers A Poignant Story Of Beating The Odds In Ways That Count

San Francisco, CA, May 8, 2013 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, debuts a touching new work by award winning manga creator, Taiyo Matsumoto, with the release of SUNNY Volume 1 on May 21st. The new hardcover release will be published under the VIZ Signature imprint, is rated ‘T’ for Teens, and will carry an MSRP of $22.99 U.S. / $26.99 CAN. SUNNY will also be available on the same day digitally for $9.99 U.S. / CAN from the VIZ Manga App and at VIZManga.com.

Translated by noted visual effects artist and Tekkonkinkreet film producer Michael Arias (The Abyss, Princess Mononoke, The Animatrix), SUNNY is the story of beating the odds, in the ways that count. It’s the brand-new masterwork from Eisner Award-winner Taiyo Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most innovative and acclaimed manga artists.

“Taiyo Matsumoto delivers an emotional, and at times bittersweet, story about a diverse group of kids that live at a Japanese orphanage,” says Leyla Aker, Vice President, Publishing. “They find solace in Sunny, a dilapidated old Nissan car that sits abandoned in the garden of the orphanage. It’s off-limits to adults but becomes something of a clubhouse for the kids and a way for them to escape their everyday lives. It’s been said that Matsumoto’s genius is his ability to portray both the essential truths and fleeting moments of transcendence in life.  His latest work, SUNNY, reaffirms his status as one of the world’s greatest manga creators.”

Taiyo Matsumoto has won extensive international critical acclaim for his rough and often-unflinching depictions of disaffected youth drawn in an unconventional and surrealist art style he developed after a visit to France and exposure to artists like Moebius. His manga works, including GOGO MONSTER, BLUE SPRING and NO. 5 (all published by VIZ Media), offer a unique art style that reflects both Japanese and European influences. His TEKKONKINKREET: BLACK & WHITE (also available from VIZ Media) won the 2008 Eisner Comic Industry Award for the Best U.S. Edition of International Material – Japan, and was also adapted into an anime feature film. Another of Matsumoto’s manga works, PING PONG, was made into an award-winning live action film.
