Oscar Night, 2011

For many film fans, tonight is the night of the biggest award show of the year. The Oscars have long been the ultimate in achievements for actors, directors, and the like. They are the highest of honors, and the greatest of achievements for those in show business.

This is also the night that news and events just seem to stop, at the same time. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows for a slower, more relaxed evening. In particular, it’s nights like this where I’ll usually pick up a book (or manga), curl up, and read. I personally have no interest in the Oscars proper, and usually just catch the highlights over Twitter or in the morning news. Of course, this changes, when an anime feature is nominated, but as this isn’t the case, I’ve decided to just give a pass on the event.

Instead, I spent my time catching up on my growing book backlog. Tonight’s lineup included a few chapters of Gunsmith Cats followed by a portion of The Adventures of the Dirty Pair. Gunsmith Cats is as fun as I remember, with a dry sense of humor mixed with intense police action. Dirty Pair, though, I’m still not sure about. On one hand, there are similarities to the titles that it spawned in the characters of Kei and Yuri. On the other hand, there are a number of striking differences in the situations, and the overall tone that I haven’t quite settled with. Since I’m only a chapter into Dirty Pair, I’ll be giving the title a bit more attention on my next “off night”, to see if the show resonates with me as well as the animated adapatations do.
