NYCC 2012: Comixology Acquires Shotaro Ishinomori’s Manga Catalog

Comixology announced that they entered a digital distribution deal with Ishinomori Production. Through the agreement, Comixology acquired the digital distribution rights to Shotaro Ishinomori’s entire manga catalog. The company began releasing titles yesterday, as the following were added to their service:

  • Cyborg 009 Volumes 1 & 2
  • Kikaider Volumes 1 & 2
  • The Skull Man Volume 1

Currently released volumes are priced at $4.99 US each. Comixology is a platform-agnostic service that and offers apps on iOS, Android, Windows 8, and the web browser.

Shotaro Ishinomori was an influential figure in both manga and tokusatsu TV programming. Ishinomori is commonly credited with the following achievements:

  • Creating the first super-powered hero team in Japan (Cyborg 009, 1963)
  • Creating the Kamen Rider franchise
  • Creating the Super Sentai franchise (beginning with Himitsu Sentai Goranger in 1975)
  • Co-founding anime production company Studio Zero with Shinichi Suzuki

In addition, Ishinomori illustrated a manga adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which ran in Nintendo Power in the US.
