Sony Snags Robotech Live-Action Film Rights

Robotech 001 - 20141004It looks like that long-rumored Robotech movie is coming after all!

Yesterday, Variety reported that Sony Pictures acquired the live-action film license to Robotech. The studio views the property as a franchise opportunity and hopes to quickly move into production.

Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (300, The Immortals) will serve as producers on the film, while Michael Gordon (300, G.I. Joe) will write its script. Michael Gordon, Jehan Agrama, Leonard B. Rosman, Christy Duran, and Harmony Gold’s Frank Agrama will serve as executive producers.

The project itself will be overseen at Sony Pictures by Doug Belgrad (Sony Pictures Entertainment Group President), Michael De Luca (Columbia Pictures Production Chief), and Matthew Milam (Sony Pictures Vice President of Creative Production). De Luca gave a brief comment to Variety about the Robotech project, which is as follows:

Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life […] That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.

In February, Deadline reported that the Robotech live-action film was back in production, and that producers Nunnari and Canton tapped Gordon to handle the film’s script.
