Earlier today, Variety reported that FUNimation acquired the domestic rights to Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast. The film will receive a limited theatrical run later this year, and a general theatrical release in early 2016.
French studio Gaumont is in charge of sales and licensing of The Boy and the Beast outside of Asia. FUNimation and Gaumont are working together to bring the release to North American theater-goers.
Yohann Comte, Gaumont’s deputy head of sales, said that other studios made offers for the film, but they ultimately chose FUNimation because “the company has been faithful to Hosoda’s work since the beginning, and they also have the ambition and commitment to screen the film to the widest possible audience.”
The two companies may be eyeing an Oscar nom, as FUNimation Executive Vice President and COO Mike DuBoise was quoted as saying “We’re confident that critics and moviegoers will quickly agree that this is an Oscar-worthy film.”
The Boy and the Beast is scheduled for a July 11 début in Japanese cinemas.
