Earlier today, film site Collider reported that James Wan signed on to direct the live-action Robotech movie. Wan, who’s resume is packed with horror hits like Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Dead Silence, recently wrapped up production on Furious 7. In addition to Robotech, Wan will also direct DC Comics’s upcoming Aquaman flick.
Variety first broke the news that Sony snagged the film rights to Robotech in March. At the time, the publication confirmed that Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (300, The Immortals) will serve as producers on the project. The script is being handled by Michael Gordon (300, G.I. Joe).
The project is being overseen by the team of Doug Belgrad (Sony Pictures Entertainment Group President), Michael De Luca (Columbia Pictures Production Chief), and Matthew Milam (Sony Pictures Vice President of Creative Production) at Sony Pictures. Michael Gordon, Jehan Agrama, Leonard B. Rosman, Christy Duran, and Harmony Gold’s Frank Agrama will serve as executive producers.
Robotech is Harmony Gold’s adaptation of three anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. The series, which ran for a total of 85 episodes, was written by the team of Carl Macek and Steve Kramer.
