The new Tama and Friends is planned to be part of a larger revival project to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary.

Tama and Friends was created in 1983 by Sony Creative Products. The series first entered the anime world in 1989 with an OVA project. This spawned a feature film in 1993, titled San-chōme no Tama: Onegai! Momo-chan o Sagashite!!, as well as a TV series in 1994.

The show was picked up by 4Kids in 2001. The company produced and syndicated an English adaptation in the fall of that year.

A pseudo-spinoff, titled Tama & Friends Sagase! Mahō no Punipuni Stone, hit Japanese TV in 2006.

In 2013, Sony Creative Products released numerous Tama & Friends products, including a novel, a stage play, and a re-release of one of the picture books released over the years.

The project saw a renewed popularity last year, when it streamed on video service NicoNico. Streams of the show garnered over 130,000 simultaneous viewers, and 1.3 million views overall.
