Major Kusanagi, at your service!
Earlier today, Paramount released the first still from Dreamworks’s live-action Ghost in the Shell film. The show features Scarlett Johansson in full costume as The Major.
Paramount also confirmed several cast and crew members attached to the project. French actress Juliette Binoche (Chocolat, The English Patient) will play the role of Dr. Ouelet. Kaori Momoi (Memoirs of a Geisha) was also confirmed for a role that’s still unknown as of press time.
Tuwanda Manyimo (The Rover), Chin Han (Independence Day: Resurgence), Lasarus Ratuere (Terra Nova), Yutaka Izumihara (UnbrokenTyrant) were all cast as Section 9 Task Force members.
Five new crew members were also named:
- Cinematographer: Jess Hall (The Spectacular Now
- Editor: Neil Smith (Snow White and the Huntsman)
- Production Designer: Jan Roelfs (Fast & Furious 6)
- Costume Designer: Kurt Swanson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay)
- Costume Designer: Bart Mueller (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay)
In addition, Paramount and Dreamworks confirmed that the film’s principal photography is in progress in Wellington, New Zealand. Furthermore, Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings) and its co-founder Richard Taylor are contributing their talents to the project.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Ghost in the Shell is on-track for a March 31, 2017 première date.
The live-action Ghost in the Shell movie was greenlit for production in January 2015. Disney originally stepped forward to produce the feature, which begins filming this year. Paramount signed on to co-produce the project in exchange for distribution rights in international markets.
In January, Paramount announced that they will handle all distribution for the feature.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) will direct the feature, which features a script by William Wheeler (The Hoax) and Jamie Moss (Street Kings). Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman was pulled onto the project to rewrite.
Ari Arad, Avi Arad and Steven Paul are attached as producers for the film. Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa will serve as executive producers.
In addition to Johansson, Sam Riley (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) were cast as The Laughing Man and Batou, respectively. Last month, Paramount revealed that Beat Takeshi will play the role of Daisuke Aramaki.
