Man At Arms Crafts Voltron’s Blazing Sword

Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! Let’S go Voltron Force!

The folks at Man at Arms: Reforged are at it again! For the uninitiated, Man at Arms: Reforged is a web series, which revolves around the master blacksmiths and craftsmen at Baltimore Knife & Sword. Every two weeks, the crew takes on the task of building a new replica weapon or piece of armor from various fictional works. No matter how crazy the request, whether it’s Wolverine’s claws from X-Men or Sephiroth’s sword from Final Fantasy VII.

At this point, the crew is quite comfortable from armaments from the anime realm. In the past, the crew has worked on numerous anime-inspired works. They’ve created a perfect replica of Saber’s Excalibur from Fate/Zero, forged Ryuko Matoi’s scissor-blade from Kill la Kill out of scissors, and craft ed Guts’s sword from Berserk out of a length of railroad track.

This time aroud the crew at Baltimore Knife & Sword brought out the pyrotechnics. The group brought the blazing sword from anime classic Voltron to life, complete with a working flaming tip.

In typical Man at Arms fashion, the crew walks users through the forging process, from concept to completion, to create an experience that’s both fun and informative. What was particularly interesting this time around, though, was the fact that the group was unable to find workable high-resolution artwork due to the show’s age. Instead, they had to turn to a recent action figure, and build a design from the bundled miniature weapon. That’s to say nothing of the process of rigging a miniature propane system for the flames, or the glasswork that goes into the various gems and embellishments.

The entire 15-minute feature is a joy to watch, from the planning phases, to the point where a person in Voltron cosplay brings the blazing sword down upon (apparently evil) fruits, and a toy Godzilla.
