Tokyo Ghoul is based on Sui Ishida’s manga of the same name. Kentarō Hagiwara will direct the film, which is being filmed from July through September. The feature is slated for a summer 2017 première.
The Tokyo Ghoul manga kicked off in the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine in September 2011, and ran through September 2014. The title spans 14 collected volumes.
Tokyo Ghoul received several adaptations, including an ongoing light novel series by Shin Towada (with illustrations by Sui Ishida), and one-shot manga spinoff Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] by Ishida. Ishida is currently working on ongoing sequel series Tokyo Ghoul:re, which began publication in October 2014.
Two anime adaptations were produced by Studio Pierrot:
- Summer 2014: Tokyo Ghoul
- Winter 2015: Tokyo Ghoul √A
Both shows were directed by Shuhei Morita (Freedom, Coicent), with character designs by Kazuhiro Miwa. Chūji Mikasano was in charge of series composition on the two projects.
A pair of OVAs, Tokyo Ghoul: Jack and Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto were also produced by Pierrot in 2015.
