Yesterday, Amazon announced that they acquired the rights to Ronja the Robber’s Daughter. The show will hit Amazon as a Prime Exclusive in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Japan.

Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) will serve as narrator on the show’s dub, which will be directed by David Freeman. Earlier today, Freeman tweeted a short clip from the recording studio:

Ronja The Robber’s Daughter is a co-production between Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro) and Polygon Pictures (Ajin – Demi-Human, Knights of Sidonia), which adapts Astrid Lindgren’s children’s book of the same name. Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea, From Up On Poppy Hill) directed the project, which features character designs by Katsuya Kondo (Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service). Hiroyuki Kawasaki (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Sorcerer Hunters) was in charge of series composition and wrote the show’s scripts.

Amazon describes Ronja The Robber’s Daughter as:

The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Ronja struggles to balance the relationship with her family and the bond with her self-proclaimed brother Birk as she comes to understand the intricate issues of family and friendship and how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.

As of press time, a première date has yet to be announced.
