Moon, theater power, make up!

Earlier today, Viz Media announced that Sailor Moon R: the Movie (Sailor Moon R Movie: Promise of the Rose) will open in select theaters on January 19. The feature will receive a wide release in over 300 theaters on January 20.

Tickets to over 50 locations are available via Eleven Arts’ homepage for the film.

Viz Media will host a première event on January 13, at Los Angeles’s Theatre at Ace Hotel. Tickets to the event are priced at $29.99, with doors set to open at 7:00PM. Attendees will receive a free Sailor Moon character board as a gift. Viz will also offer merchandise at the show, including official apparel and animation products. The Ace Hotel’s bar will serve Sailor Moon themed cocktails.

Sailor Moon R: The Movie is a sequel to the Sailor Moon R TV series. Series director Kunihiko Ikuhara (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Penguindrum) directed the feature at Toei Animation and TV Asahi, with Kazuko Tadano (Wedding Peach, Dancougar – Super Beast Machine God) providing character designs. Sukehiro Tomita (Ceres, Celestial Legend, Kimagure Orange Road) wrote the film’s screenplay.

Sailor Moon R: The Movie originally hit Japanese theaters in May 1993. Pioneer Entertainment released the feature in North America on DVD.

Viz released an extended trailer for the feature last week. You can check it out below:
