Sekai Project’s Nekopara OVA Kickstarter Closes With $963,376

Sekai Project taught the world an important lesson: Always bet on catgirls.

On Saturday, Sekai Project’s Kickstarter to produce an OVA based on Nekopara completed its run. The final funding tally rests at $963,376 across 9,122 backers, with an average contribution of $105.61 per backer. The project is officially the “most funded animation on Kickstarter”, beating out Under the Dog‘s $878,028 take.

A “slacker backer” campaign will hit the web, which will support PayPal. Details will be revealed in the near future.

Sekai Project launched the drive on December 28, with a funding goal of $100,000. The drive beat its initial target within an hour of opening.

The project managed to beat the $800,000 stretch goal, which ensures the production of a mini visual novel that focuses on Chocola and Vanilla as children. The project did fall short of its ultimate $1 million goal, which would see the production of an anime short based on the new visual novel.

Nekopara will be based on Neko Works’ erotic visual novel series of the same name. As of press time, staff for the project has yet to be announced. The staff for the upcoming promotional video, though, is as follows:

  • Storyboard/Production: Hayashi Hiroki
  • Animation Director: Hirano Yuichi, Mishima Chie
  • Art Director: Kurata Kenichi
  • Animation Checker: Motoki Kasumi
  • Coloring Coordination/Design/Checking: Tanaka Chiharu

  • Supervisor: NEKO WORKs
  • Original Work: Sayori(NEKO WORKs)
  • Theme song: Baby?Lady LOVE

The first Nekopara visual novel hit Japanese stores on December 29, 2014. The sequel, Nekopara Vol. 2, was released on February 19, 2016.

Sekai Project currently distributes the Nekopara visual novels in North America. They describe the series as:

What’s NEKOPARA? Why, it’s a cat paradise! Kashou Minaduki, the son of a long line of Japanese confection makers moved out to open his own shop “La Soleil” as a patisserie. But upon moving out, hidden amongst his things were two of the catgirls, Chocola and Vanilla, that the family had been raising. When he tried to send them back, they begged and pleaded until he gave in and now they’ve opened La Soleil together. With two catgirls who really, REALLY love their master trying their very best and occasionally failing — a heartful comedy opens for business!

Sekai Project released several character visuals to and a teaser trailer to promote the series. You can check these out below:
