Mike Ferreira: Good evening everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club. Tonight, I’m joined by L.B. Bryant and Anthony Simpson
L.B. Bryant: Hello
Anthony Simpson: Evening
Mike Ferreira: This Otakon weekend, we’re continuing our discussion of Classroom of the Elite with episode 5: Hell Is Other People – no, that’s the real title this time
Anthony Simpson: There is some truth in that title.
L.B. Bryant: Can’t say I disagree with that *shrugs*
Mike Ferreira: Indeed.

Anthony Simpson: So I was creeped out by that guy at the store.
L.B. Bryant: Join the clubn
Mike Ferreira: …he reminds me of somebody I worked with at the Bullseye Shop
Anthony Simpson: Like I could see him being arrested for getting caught video taping women in a bathroom or locker room.
Mike Ferreira: Well funny story, there
Mike Ferreira: I don’t think I can say it without getting sued for libel, though.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, tell it off the record later heh
Mike Ferreira: Yep.

Anthony Simpson: Back on topic this was one of the better episodes so far.
L.B. Bryant: It did kind of surprise me that the shy girl was actually a exhibitionist. It’s always the quiet ones that you least suspect.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed.
Anthony Simpson: True, she’s not very comfortable around people so I see her doing stuff like that as way to deal with her issues.
Anthony Simpson: I would also argue that the shy girl has some serious confidence issues.
Mike Ferreira: Agreed. The use of body language in this episode was really fantastic.
Anthony Simpson: It was.
Anthony Simpson: The student council setting was quite intense.
L.B. Bryant: Speaking of body language, the highlight of this episode for me was Ayanokoji’s way of getting Horikita to stand up during the hearing lol

Mike Ferreira: That was super random (lol).
Anthony Simpson: It came out of left field for me.
L.B. Bryant: But effective, in my book
Mike Ferreira: I can’t say I’ve ever tried it
Anthony Simpson: neither have I.
L.B. Bryant: I haven’t done exactly that to my wife but I’ve done similar and it does work, heh
Mike Ferreira: Heh. Good to know.

Anthony Simpson: I will say that Horikita was right about fighting multiple people at the same time. You would have be a damn good fighter to be able to deal with three people at the same time.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed.
L.B. Bryant: True
L.B. Bryant: The whole hearing scene was pretty intense I’ll agree there as well.
Anthony Simpson: And we know the student council president knows this being that he is a martial artists.
Mike Ferreira: Anyone else want to reach into the screen and slap that Class C teacher?
L.B. Bryant: Yes I did
Anthony Simpson: I did.
Anthony Simpson: He’s an asshat.
Mike Ferreira: We’ll use that word. Mine was much less usable in polite company

Anthony Simpson: So does anyone have a guess on what’s going to happen next week with the outcome.
L.B. Bryant: I can’t even come close to venturing a guess at this point
Mike Ferreira: Hm. I’m wagering that Sudo will get exonerated.
Anthony Simpson: could be the case. Probably something with the camera will come up.
L.B. Bryant: That would make sense to me.
Mike Ferreira: Yep.
Mike Ferreira: That “recording” clip will likely arise somewhere

Anthony Simpson: I could be wrong, but something tells the camera has more on it than we know.
Anthony Simpson: That plus the MC signed his name instead of the girl that owns the camera.
Mike Ferreira: Oh yeah.
Mike Ferreira: So my guess is this will become our big conflict for the episode after Sudo.
Anthony Simpson: could be. I mean maybe he just signed so the glasses girl wouldn’t be creeped out anymore.
Mike Ferreira: Still, it has his personal details. So it’ll likely end up as leverage somewhere
Mike Ferreira: It’s a Chekhov’s Gun situation
Anthony Simpson: true.
L.B. Bryant: I think that was the case initially but I do think it’s going to come back around at some point in the future.
Mike Ferreira: And this show is NOT subtle
Mike Ferreira: If so, they’d be able to handle Kushida’s heel-turn more gracefully
Anthony Simpson: subtle isn’t one of the show’s strong points.

Mike Ferreira: You could go running into a room screaming “IT’S ALL A LIE OUR MAIN CHARACTER IS SUPER BRILLIANT” and be more subtle at this point
Mike Ferreira: I know I come down hard on this show – mostly because I adore the concept.
Mike Ferreira: I just really wish it was handled with a more deft hand.
Anthony Simpson: Well the show is adapted from a LN so I’m assuming that some of this has to do with the source material.
Mike Ferreira: Definitely.
Anthony Simpson: Maybe the LN is more subtle and the anime version is doing a shit job of adapting it.
Mike Ferreira: I believe this is a relative green writer. Aoi Akashiro only handled Series Composition for Fuuka previously
Anthony Simpson: The writer also did scripts for Konosuba, Enride, and Danganronpa The Animation.
Mike Ferreira: Yeah… still relatively new, though.
Anthony Simpson: yea.
Mike Ferreira: so yeah… could be the curse of the new writer. It’s a shame, because there’s just so much red meat to work with.
Mike Ferreira: Like – I harp on the Kushida moment, but that’s just this show in a nutshell for me – moments of potential, ham-fistedly handled and then dropped to never be seen again.
Anthony Simpson: True, like I was hoping we were going some type of social commentary “meritocracy” but it seems that isn’t likely to happen.
L.B. Bryant: Can’t argue there.

Mike Ferreira: Yeah… this show is too clumsy to handle it, sadly
Mike Ferreira: Hrm… any final thoughts before we close out this week’s meeting?
Anthony Simpson: It was one of the better episodes so far.
Mike Ferreira: Can’t argue that.
L.B. Bryant: While I’m anticipating a train wreck of an ending, I’m still holding out hope.
Mike Ferreira: I’m eagerly awaiting a train wreck, personally
Mike Ferreira: I want to see this show just jump off the rails and leave a trail of destruction in its wake.
Anthony Simpson: A lot of wasted potential.
Mike Ferreira: That’s the show’s tagline!
Mike Ferreira: Joking aside, I’m just expecting few people to be happy at the end of this
Anthony Simpson: yea
Mike Ferreira: Aniwho, that’s all the time we have this evening. Have a great night, everyone!
Anthony Simpson: Goodnight.
