Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama manga began in the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2004. The ongoing series currently spans 66 collected volumes, with the most recent hitting stores on November 4. The title is currently in its final arc, which kicked off in July.
The Gintama anime adapts Sorachi’s work. The first series began airing in April 2006, and ran through March 2010. The most recent season aired from January 2017 through March 2017. A total of 328 episodes have been produced to date.
Chizuru Miyawaki directed the newest series at Bandai Namco Pictures, with Shinji Takeuchi (Fairy Tail, Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!) providing character designs. Crunchyroll streamed the show as it aired in Japan. They describe Gintama as:
In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
