I love this time of year the best. I’m not talking about the change from summer to autumn (though that is a wonderful time), I’m talking about the last couple of weeks before a new season of anime starts. With each passing day, another new season anime gets another promotional video as production committees vie for the attention of potential viewers! Today the series in question is an adaptation of the light novel series Juni Taisen which is written by Nisi Oisin whom you might remember from a little franchise called Monogatari.
Set to premiere on October 3rd, the series sounds kind of like Fate/Stay Night only instead of heroic spirits, you have representations of the Chinese zodiac instead. Crunchyroll describes the story more fully as:
The record of the bloody battle between the twelve proud warriors—
The 12th Twelve Tournament that gets held every twelve years…
Twelve brave warriors who bear the names of the signs of the zodiac fight each other for the lives and souls.
The participants are twelve very strange warriors: “Rat,” “Ox,” “Tiger,” “Rabbit,” “Dragon,” “Snake,” “Horse,” “Goat,”
Monkey,” “Rooster,” “Dog,” and “Pig.”
The victor of this tournament gets to have one wish granted, whatever the wish may be.
The one wish they want granted—
Who will be the final survivor?
Whose tears will flow on the bloody battlefield filled with conspiracy and murder?
A soul-shaking battle royale is about to begin.
The crew for this one is an interesting mixed bag. Animation is being produced by Graphinica (Tales of Zestiria the X) while the direction is being handled by Naoto Hosoda (SHUFFLE!, The Devil Is a Part-Timer!) with series composition by Sadayuki Murai (Natsume’s Book of Friends).
