“Blade Runner Black Out 2022” to Make Its Global Debut on Crunchyroll & VRV

You know, sometimes I get to thinking and I wonder if maybe I myself am watching an anime about an android. Weird, right? Wouldn’t that be something?

Earlier today, Crunchyroll announced that Shinichiro Watanabe’s Blade Runner Black Out 2022 will make its global début on their platform. The feature will stream on both Crunchyroll and VRV in all regions outside of Asia, starting September 26 at 6:49AM Pacific (9:49AM Eastern).

Crunchyroll started streaming a subtitled trailer for the film, which you can check out below:

Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is one of several animated short films that were produced as a way to bridge the gap between the original cyberpunk classic and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049.

Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe is pulling double duty as screenwriter and director at Cygames Pictures. Shukou Murase (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Argento Soma) is providing character designs and serving as animation director for the project. Flying Lotus is scoring the soundtrack.

The confirmed voice cast includes:

  • Iggy: Kenichiro Matsuda
  • Trixie: Ichigo Aoba
  • Ren: Makoto Furukawa

As the title implies, Blade Runner Black Out 2022 will take place during a black-out in the year 2022. Set three years after the original Blade Runner, the feature will be set during a blackout that cripples the United States’ west coast.

Other short films produced in the lead-up to Blade Runner 2049 include 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run.

Update 9/22/2017: The premiere was moved up to 6:49AM Pacific from 4:49AM Pacific. The article has been updated to reflect this.
