Yoshitomo Yonetani (Nurse Witch Komugi, Tiger & Bunny The Movie -The Rising-) directed the series at J.C. Staff, while Tomoyuki Shitaya (Bakuman, Kiss×sis) provided character designs. Scripts were provided by Shinichi Inotsume and Shogo Yasukawa.

Two seasons were produced to date. The first season, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, aired in the Spring and Summer broadcast seasons last year. The season spanned 24 episodes. The second season, Food Wars! The Second Plate, aired in the Summer 2016 season, and spanned 13 episodes.

Sentai Filmworks currently holds the rights to the series, which they describe as:

Shokugeki no Soma centers on Yukihira Soma, a middle school student who is determined to surpass his father’s culinary skills. One day, his father decides to close down their family restaurant and hone his skills in Europe. Before leaving he enrolls Soma in an elite culinary school that is extremely difficult to enter with a graduation rate of only 10 percent. Will Souma be able to improve his skills, or will the kitchen prove to be too hot? less
