Mike Ferreira: Good evening, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club. I’m Mike Ferreira, and I’m joined by Anthony Simpson and L.B. Bryant.
Anthony Simpson: Evening
L.B. Bryant: Hello!
Mike Ferreira: Tonight we’ll be discussing The Ancient Magus’ Bride episode 6: “Fairies are Weird.”
L.B. Bryant: So… let’s just address the big issue I had with this episode right away… WTF was up with Titania’s breasts???

Mike Ferreira: Yeah… I was trying to sidestep that! They seemed to put this very weird focus on her chest the entire time she was onscreen
L.B. Bryant: So far the art and designs in this series have been damn near flawless but that was just bad.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed. I think it’s particularly jarring because the rest of the show nailed things so well
L.B. Bryant: And yeah, you know that it was intentional because they were put front and center on more than one occasion.
Mike Ferreira: Like, suddenly “TITS! And they have detailed jiggle physics ’cause why not!?”
Anthony Simpson: They did seem a bit…off.
L.B. Bryant: My wife was watching the episode with me and she noticed the weird water balloony quality of them before I did.
Mike Ferreira: Yeah… I was sitting there wondering if I was seeing things. It was so freaking weird.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, just a very bizarre choice by the art team.
Mike Ferreira: That’s saying it lightly.
Anthony Simpson: It was.
Mike Ferreira: It was jarring… and my guess is that this will become one of those “comically bad moments in great anime” listicle items.
Anthony Simpson: That said I wanna see a spin off with just the adventures of Titania and Oberon.

L.B. Bryant: Oberon I think was good because we got such a small dose of him. I’m not sure I could handle an entire episode of him.
Mike Ferreira: Titania was a good character, though – design choices aside
Mike Ferreira: She’s sharp, smart, and her sense of humor is delightfully dry
L.B. Bryant: I also really liked the arrogant Spriggan that accompanied her.
Mike Ferreira: He was fun.
Anthony Simpson: Titania quickly became a favorite of mine in the episode for the reasons Mike said.
Mike Ferreira: I’d love to see more of her, truth be told.
Anthony Simpson: Same here.

L.B. Bryant: In another bit… remember a couple of weeks ago when I was saying that I really wanted to see Chise soften up and show her dere dere side? This episode gave me what I wanted in that regard and I loved seeing it.
Mike Ferreira: Amen to that. Chise, in general, has been adding layers to her character over the past weeks.
L.B. Bryant: I loved seeing her reach out and actually touch Elias softly. It was such a sweet moment.
Anthony Simpson: It was.
Mike Ferreira: It was. As was Elias’ first pangs of real emotion.
Anthony Simpson: So on to the episode, we learned what Elias wants to do for Chise in trying to expand her lifespan.
Mike Ferreira: Yeah.
Anthony Simpson: We also learned what Elias is as well.
Mike Ferreira: Yeah… he’s a halfling, which is an interesting turn of events
Anthony Simpson: That might explain his appearance.

L.B. Bryant: Can someone refresh my memory a bit on this point? I’m having trouble recalling exactly what was said about who he is.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed.
Mike Ferreira: “Not quite a fae, but not quite human or demon either” or something like that
L.B. Bryant: Ah right, okies. I remember now. Thanks
Anthony Simpson: He’s like a mutt.
Mike Ferreira: “I’m incomplete. I cannot empathize with you.” Yada yada
Mike Ferreira: We started to see more of Simon’s role come about in this one, too. He’s more than a priest, and serves as a watchdog
L.B. Bryant: I loved the interaction between Titania and Simon. It made me giggle.
Mike Ferreira: That was amazing.
Anthony Simpson: That was great to see.
Mike Ferreira: Also, love how they’re working in the “traveling sorcerer” more
Mike Ferreira: I’m curious to see how they figured into Renfred losing his arm.
Mike Ferreira: If at all.
L.B. Bryant: I’m sure that’ll come up again at some point in the future.
Mike Ferreira: I hope so. They’re shaping up to be a truly loathsome foe.

Anthony Simpson: They are.
Anthony Simpson: I figure it might come up if we get any backstory with Elias.
Mike Ferreira: On another note, we also saw Chise starting to attribute real value to her life. At the start of the show, we saw a girl who cared not what happened. Now, she’s beginning to worry about the “what ifs” that come with mortality.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed.
Anthony Simpson: She is starting to build her self back into a person.
Anthony Simpson: I also liked the line when she asked Elias why he couldn’t have bought her ten years ago.
Mike Ferreira: Same.
L.B. Bryant: I just find it interesting how every episode nudges Chise closer and closer towards having self worth and esteem. It’s slow but steady progression and it’s just super nice to see since we’ve all been through series where seemingly all of the progression/growth is saved for the very end of the show.

Anthony Simpson: they half a year to do the show so they can take their time. It’s also a testament to the source material being strong.
L.B. Bryant: Agreed there. Has anyone checked out the source material yet? I want to but I don’t want to spoil myself on any coming developments.
Mike Ferreira: I haven’t, because I want this to be a surprise until the end.
Anthony Simpson: I haven’t other than just reading the first chapter.
Mike Ferreira: I already screwed myself on Food Wars. Not making that mistake again
L.B. Bryant: This is def a series where I’ll read the manga after the anime is done.
Mike Ferreira: Amen to that.
Anthony Simpson: From what I’ve seen on forums this episode was mostly chapter eight of the manga.
Mike Ferreira: Interesting.
Mike Ferreira: My only real complaint, though, animators’ weird focus Titania’s breasts aside, is that each episode just goes by so quickly. Like Drifters, this is one of those shows where I’m genuinely disappointed when it’s over.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, the pacing of this episode felt super fast. I was honestly surprised when the ending credits starting rolling this week.
L.B. Bryant: It just felt like it went by in a pleasant flash.

Mike Ferreira: Indeed.
Mike Ferreira: On the one hand, I’m glad that it’s picking up the pace, and we’re getting more bombs dropped weekly
Mike Ferreira: On the other… I want more in my veins now!
L.B. Bryant: lol
Mike Ferreira: Any final thoughts on the episode this week?
Anthony Simpson: More Titania please, less jiggle physics please.
L.B. Bryant: I’m already looking forward to next Saturday :)
Anthony Simpson: Also good to see Chise starting to turn things around and become more self confident.
Mike Ferreira: Indeed. :) Next Saturday will make me feel bad that I’m in New York.
Mike Ferreira: Anyway, that’s all the time we have this week. Thanks for joining, as always. Have a great night!
L.B. Bryant: Laters!
Anthony Simpson: Good night.
