RX-78 Gundam Appears in “Ready Player One” Movie Trailer

Well, I guess we can say that Gundam is making its Hollywood theatrical début… in some form.

Earlier today, the teaser trailer for Stephen Spielberg’s Ready Player One film hit the web. The two-and-a-half minute promo introduces the film’s major plot points, as lead character Wade Watts provides narration.

Normally, we’re not an outlet to discuss live-action flicks unless it’s say, Alita: Battle Angel or a Ghost in the Shell. But in this case, we had to make the exception. The trailer is positively packed with references from popular video games, TV, and the like. Icons like Overwatch‘s Tracer and Street Fighter‘s Chun Li appear beside characters like Batman‘s The Joker and Harley Quinn, and The Iron Giant.

Eagle-eyed anime fans will notice that a very familiar robot appears amid this mish-mash of nerd culture geekery. At the 2:12 mark, the RX-78 Gundam, from Mobile Suit Gundam makes an appearance.

Ready Player One hits theaters on March 30. The feature adapts Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. Stephen Spielberg (E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) is directing the project, which features a script by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. Warner Bros. Pictures is directing the film.
