Sadly, Chief Aramaki will not be returning from his latest endeavour.
Earlier today, voice acting agency Mausu Promotion reported that voice actor Tamio Ohki passed away. He was 89. Ohki passed on December 14, due to an unspecified illness.
Tamio Ohki was active in the anime industry since 1946. He made his anime debut in 1968, when he played Shigeru Suzuhara in Star of the Giants. From there, he went on to become a prolific narrator and actor, giving life to iconic characters like Astro Boy‘s Dr. Tenma, Ashita no Joe‘s Mikinosuke Shiraki, and Urusei Yatsura‘s Sugawara no Michizane.
Possibly his best-known anime role, though, was that of Chief Daisuke Aramaki in both of Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell films.
In live-action film, Ohki provided the English voice dub voices for Professor Xavier in the X-Men movies, and Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back.
We offer our deepest condolences to Ohki-san’s family and friends.
