What is it?
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is the series that spawned a generation of mecha fans. This 1995 series was the brainchild of studio Sunrise, directed by Masashi Ikeda (Inuyasha, Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers) and Shinji Takamatsu (Gintama, Nanbaka). Shukou Murase (Gasaraki, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie) contributed character designs, while Katsuyuki Sumisawa (Inuyasha, Yakitate!! Japan) took charge of series composition.
The series was a decidedly different take on the Gundam formula, placing emphasis on five Mobile Suit pilots and their own personal tales, in addition to the usual “horrors of war” that seems to permeate the franchise. The series delighted audiences across the globe, and found its way to the small screen in North America, with massively popular runs on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block and Teletoon. For many, this was a jumping-in point for the Gundma universe. For others, a way into the world of anime, as a whole.
Even today, the series holds great mindshare in the subculture at large. You’d be hard-pressed to find an anime fan who doesn’t know Marimeia Kushrenada’s haunting line of “History is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.” Likewise, the Wing, Deathscythe, and Shenlong stand out against the new hotness.
