This small soldier is bringing her biggest battle yet to the silver screen.

Earlier today, the official Youjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil anime website updated with a new visual and trailer for the upcoming theatrical film. We break the details down below:

Trailer

The 30-second trailer opens with a crowd shot, where Tanya addresses her platoon. The scene shifts to an aerial battle, cutting between the major characters as Tanya narrates.

Key Visual

The image, which was drawn by original illustrator Shinobu Shinotsuki, features Tanya in formal uniform as she grabs for a watch. Her hands are smeared with blood.

Youjo Senki‘s theatrical film was first unveiled in the February issue of Newtype. The film will be a sequel to the original TV series. Newtype includes an interview with director Uemura, who notes that “Relationships between Tanya and her superiors are changing, and her subordinates continue to grow.”

Uemura added that the film was originally not planned, though it came to be thanks to fan support. He added “I’m excited to direct a sequel to such a unique series. […] I’d like to show you something of a grand scale for the movie […] I want to go on a rampage, just remove the limiter in my head. I recently saw Dunkirk, which may affect the theatrical film. (laughs)”

Uemura will return to direct the project at Studio NuT. Two confirmed voice cast members will reprise their roles:

  • Tanya Degurechaff: Aoi Yūki
  • Visha: Saori Hayami

Youjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil originally aired in the Winter 2017 broadcast season. An “important announcement” will be made during the rebroadcast of the show’s second episode, Prologue. The episode will air on BS11 on January 8, at 24:30 (1/9/2018 at 12:30AM).

The series is based on Carlo Zen and illustrator Shinobu Shinotsuki’s light novel series of the same name. Yutaka Uemura (Punch Line, The Mystic Archives of Dantalian) directed the show at Studio NuT, with Yuji Hosogoe providing character designs. Kenta Ihara was in charge of series composition.

Crunchyroll streamed Youjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil as a simulcast, while Funimation produced a SimulDub for the title. Crunchyroll describes the show as:

It is June of the year CE 1923. A young girl with blond hair and blue eyes, Tanya Degurechaff, has entered the final curriculum of the Imperial Military Academy and is training at the third patrol line in the northern military district, the Norden Theater, as part of her service to the force. Her training, the first step toward a brilliant career as an aviation mage, should have gone off without a hitch… but things took an unexpected turn.
