The Spice and Wolf light novels originally launched in 2006 under Dengeki’s Deneki Bunko imprint. The ongoing series currently has 20 volumes, with the most recent shipping to stores on February 10.

The series spawned two anime TV series, which aired in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Takeo Takahashi (Citrus, MAOYU) directed both shows at Imagin, with Naruhisa Arakawa (Steam Detectives, Outbreak Company) writing the screenplays. Kazuya Kuroda (Master of Mosquiton, Vandread) provided character designs for the first series, while Toshimitsu Kobayashi (Aoharu x Machinegun, El Hazard: The Alternative World) took over for the sequel.

Funimation currently holds the rights to the Spice and Wolf anime, which they describe as:

Lawrence, a traveling merchant searching for profit, finds a naked girl with the ears and tail of a wolf asleep in his cart. Her name is Holo, a harvest goddess with an untamed beast lurking inside who longs to return to her beloved northern home.

Armed with his street smarts and her animal instincts, the simple peddler and forgotten deity begin a journey through the wild countryside. Along their path, the riches of happiness shall be reaped even as the bankruptcy which dwells in the human heart is exposed.
