Samantha Ferreira: KITTIES! :O SO MANY KITTIES! :O
… … … that is my review of episode 3
Anyway! Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club! I’m Samantha, and I’m here with L.B. Bryant and Anthony Simpson.
Anthony Simpson: Evening
L.B. Bryant: Hello!
Samantha Ferreira: We’re back from a short break for Anime Boston and Sakura Con, and we’re ready to talk up Fruits Basket! This week, we’ll be talking up Episode 3, “Kyon-kyon’s taste of sweet chin music” and Episode 4: “BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A BOAR-A”
And wow, to both episodes. I don’t know where to even begin things.
Anthony Simpson: They were both good episodes lets start with that.
L.B. Bryant: Indeed.
Samantha Ferreira: Agreed
And both were pretty significant – Episode 3 saw Kyo finally starting to settle into the normal life and introduced a new character who will remain nameless until he’s formally introduced. Meanwhile, episode 4 had Kagura, who was straight-up amazing.
L.B. Bryant: The introduction of [redacted] was a trip for my wife because she had totally forgotten that he speaks German in the manga lol
Anthony Simpson: I wasn’t expecting a character to speak German of all things.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed, lol
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, I’m really looking forward to when we get to hear his story in this version. It was pretty heartbreaking in the original so I’m guessing it’ll be even more so in this one.
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise
L.B. Bryant: That’s one thing I really like about this version; all the emotions (happy and sad) are dialed up to 11.
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. Like… there was no better example of that than with Kagura
She literally used Kyo as a propeller at one point
Anthony Simpson: Having this be my first go around with the franchise in animated form I have to agree with L.B I’m liking have all the emotions at 11.
L.B. Bryant: That was another thing that I loved… they made Kagura even MORE violent and fearsome. I didn’t think that was possible! lol
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise, lol… but there we go. She was straight-up giving Jojo punches at one point and dual wielding kitchen knives in a flashback
Samantha Ferreira: Like… I was amazed they didn’t sell it all and just have her going “oraoraoraoraoraora”
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, the kitchen knives in the flashback was just… wow. So much more scary than the giant rock she was holding over Kyo’s head in the original lol
Samantha Ferreira: The giant rock was more Tom & Jerry scary. That was straight-up yandere territory
Anthony Simpson: Needless to say don’t get on Kagura’s bad side.
Samantha Ferreira: Or her good side, in Kyo’s case
Anthony Simpson: True
L.B. Bryant: Another change that I found to be interesting in this version is that Kagura isn’t horrible at house chores this time. In the original she destroys the kitchen trying to cook but in this case she makes a huge feast without a second thought.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. It’s a pretty big 180 from her 2001 incarnation
L.B. Bryant: Yeah so I found that to be a pretty remarkable change to her character.
Samantha Ferreira: To be fair, this is closer to her original incarnation than the anime was
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, that’s true.
One thing that I don’t remember from the manga but was changed in the dub script; instead of leeks they are now called chives. My wife and I actually had to look it up to see if they were the same thing when we watched lol
Anthony Simpson: They call them chives in the subtitles as well.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed.
IIRC, Tohru does call them leeks when Kyo asks, though
L.B. Bryant: Does she? I don’t remember lol
Samantha Ferreira: I believe so. Let me double-check
L.B. Bryant: Ah alright.
Samantha Ferreira: So we’re both right!
L.B. Bryant: lol yay!
Samantha Ferreira: lol.
But yeah… there’s so much going on now, and I’m loving it
L.B. Bryant: Plus… PLUS… the series is still SO PRETTY.
Samantha Ferreira: It is! WHY IS THIS SHOW SO PRETTY!
Anthony Simpson: Its a pretty show. I’m glad to see that it looks so good.
L.B. Bryant: It’s kind of like comparing the original 2006 DEEN Fate/Stay Night to everything that ufotable has done. They’re from two different times but still… the new version is blowing the old out of the water.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed.
Minus the tax fraud (zing)
L.B. Bryant: Ouch. :)
Samantha Ferreira: Hehe.
L.B. Bryant: I really want to talk about what I’m worried will happen in the next episode but I don’t want to spoil Anthony so I’m restraining myself lol
Samantha Ferreira: Hehe. I share your concerns, but I can’t wait to see how it plays out
Anthony Simpson: Don’t spoil me please.
Samantha Ferreira: I won’t
L.B. Bryant: Me either.
Anthony Simpson: I’m doing my best to avoid spoilers and going on Wikipedia and reading about the series. I’m trying to watch this show as blind as possible.
In terms of not being spoiled.
L.B. Bryant: I think that’s a good way to approach it.
Samantha Ferreira: True that.
We both saw this like a decade ago, and I think either of us would be salty if someone spoiled the show for us.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah totally.
Anthony Simpson: That is one thing I have to say going in blind is that I haven nothing to compare it to.
L.B. Bryant: Is there anything that you have questions about so far? The story has been pretty straight forward thus far but is there anything you’re already wondering about as a new viewer?
Anthony Simpson: Nothing so far.
L.B. Bryant: Cool. :)
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed.
Now, if we were talking Sarazanmai, I’d have my own questions.
But that’s another show for another day
L.B. Bryant: Yeah lol
Anthony Simpson: Yes it is. Side note Harukappa best boy in that show.
Samantha Ferreira: Hehe
Anthony Simpson: L.B or Sam anything else to add to the two episodes we discussed?
Samantha Ferreira: Hrm. I think I’ve said what needs to be said.
L.B. Bryant: Nopes, I’m good.
Samantha Ferreira: I have one more thing to day: I love Kagura’s backpack.
Now I”m done
And guess that does it for this week. Until next time, remember: if you see a meek girl with a kitty backpack, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
Have a great night, everybody
Anthony Simpson: Goodnight
