Meeting Date: 5/19/2019

Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club! I’m Samantha, and I’m here with L.B. Bryant
L.B. Bryant: Hello!
Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’re talking up Fruits Basket episode 7: Sad Hatori, in the Snow.
AKA “The one where stuff gets dark”
L.B. Bryant: Yeeeeah, this episode did get a bit dark
Samantha Ferreira: Just a bit
I mean… we have the incest, then we have Akito driving a girl to mental illness, then Hatori erasing her memory, and, yikes

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Tohru Honda with swirly eyes
L.B. Bryant: Yeah truth
Samantha Ferreira: It was also our first real glimpse into the world of the Soma clan, aside from the few interludes with Shigure and Akito, which is fascinating in itself
L.B. Bryant: It’s fascinating to me how large the Sohma clan is and how so few of them know about the curse. That seems like a pretty major secret to keep hidden for so long.
Samantha Ferreira: That’s saying it lightly. I mean… you’d think this should be common knowledge given that the family has literally hundreds in it
And humans, by and large, CANNOT keep secrets
L.B. Bryant: Yeah so I’m kind of amazed that it’s still a secret from even the family
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise.
That said, they needed a conduit for Akito going berserk and ruining that poor girl’s life. D:

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Akito Soma, in a bout of fury
L.B. Bryant: So, I was pretty pleased with the whole story between Hatori and Kana. It was pretty well done.
Samantha Ferreira: It really was! And, truth be told, it was something that made me appreciate them going with an all-new cast this time around. While I love Murasaki Wakaba, Maaya Sakamoto going utterly ballistic was freaking amazing.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, in the dub its Colleen Clinkenbeard and she did a pretty damn great job with that scene
Samantha Ferreira: I was kind of amazed. Like… this is one of those episodes that can be made or broken on its delivery, and it just pulled no punches
L.B. Bryant: Indeed.
I’m glad that they included the ‘one more word and I’ll tell the publishing industry every embarrassing thing you’ve done since you were four’ line as well
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. It was a beautiful moment of levity
Just like when Hatori transformed

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Hatori Soma, transformed into a seahorse
L.B. Bryant: Speaking of that, I’m glad that they included a mention that Seahorses are also known as Seadragons. The original series didn’t do that and I remember being confused about that when I first saw it.
Samantha Ferreira: Agreed. It helps to make that connection a little better
Like “OK, why…?”
L.B. Bryant: On another note, I am still having trouble understanding Momiji’s German accent lol
Samantha Ferreira: I can’t say I relate, lol – the subs are basically “English English English [GERMAN WORD] English English”
L.B. Bryant: lol yeah, in this case I would love it if I could have subtitles just for Momiji
Samantha Ferreira: lol
Monkey Paw wish: you get the subtitles, but it’s literally “English [SIE BIEN] English”
L.B. Bryant: hehehe
Samantha Ferreira: Hehe. But yeah. I will say, Momiji is still a treasure

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Momiji Soma, holding a pillow as he talks
L.B. Bryant: Indeed. Great character and I can’t wait to see what developments come forward once we get into the brand new manga material that we didn’t get in the original.
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise.
I’m curious to see the reaction to some of the unadapted material
Fruits Basket got… well…
It got dark
Very dark
L.B. Bryant: Yeah so I’ve heard.
Samantha Ferreira: I won’t say any more
L.B. Bryant: lol ok

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Hatori Soma threatens Shigure Soma, as Tohru Honda watches
Samantha Ferreira: But yeah… I think that about sums it up for me this episode. The drama between Hatori and Kana was amazingly done, the feels were just there… and Shigure being best problematic bro is still a thing.,

Also, Tohru has a camera now.
L.B. Bryant: hehe Shigure is just awesome
Samantha Ferreira: He really is
Any other comments this week?
L.B. Bryant: No, it was pretty tame this week. Not a whole to say about this episode. :)
Samantha Ferreira: If emotional abuse and forced amnesia is “tame” buckle up! :P
(Seriously, pray for Hatori – he deserves happiness D: )
Anyway… til next time, remember: Seahorses do not go in the bathtub!
Have a great night
L.B. Bryant: Night! :)

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 7 Still: Hatori Soma and Kana Soma gaze lovingly into each others' eyes.
