Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club. I’m Samantha, and I’m here with L.B. Bryant and Anthony Simpson
Anthony Simpson: Evening
L.B. Bryant: Hello!
Samantha Ferreira: Tonight we’re talking up Fruits Basket episode 21: “Best Moms Ever: The Hanajima-san story”
L.B. Bryant: I will be forever grateful that this adaptation cut out the Yuki Fan Club cheer whenever they appeared on screen.
I like the Yuki Fan Club because they’re fun ‘villains’ but gods I hated that stupid cheer in the original adaptation.
Samantha Ferreira: Hey, when you have $5 and a piece of string, you have to make that animation budget stretch a bit. :p
L.B. Bryant: heh
Anthony Simpson: When I watch the original FB in the future I’m not going to be looking forward to that.
L.B. Bryant: Luckily it only happens 3 times and each time it appears it goes by faster and faster lol
Anthony Simpson: I think I am going to have nightmares now that I have witnessed that.
L.B. Bryant: You’re welcome
Samantha Ferreira: lol, They really toned down the weird “Daichi-isms” in this adaptation, thankfully.
L.B. Bryant: That being said, this was such a good episode (Hello, my name is broken record)
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. (Hi, Broken Record. I’m Sam!)
Anthony Simpson: I really enjoyed it as well (Hi, Broken Record. I’m Anthony!)
Samantha Ferreira: Hanajima’s brother is just amazing. He’s perfectly creepy without being disturbing
L.B. Bryant: The biggest thing I appreciated about this episode is the updated art style. In the original adaptation, Hanajima’s room was decidedly not goth but I loved that they decorated her room in black and purple this time. :)
Samantha Ferreira: I kind of liked the moments with the fan club. The president’s mom screaming at her in the morning was hilarious, as was the greater goon squad’s regular “Shojo white eyes” when shit got real
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, I like having the fan club in the series. They provide some great excuses for relationship growth (such as with Megumi’s monologue towards the end of the episode regarding what love and jealousy is) without being outright evil.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. Plus they provide a great vehicle for some of the more zany stuff
L.B. Bryant: That said, I loved Megumi’s speech about love and jealousy. Wonderfully written.
Samantha Ferreira: Same.
Anthony Simpson: Same
Samantha Ferreira: This whole episode was just beautifully written
… … …we need more Smug! Tohru, though – that was a priceless moment.
L.B. Bryant: The only thing in this episode that wasn’t improved upon from the original was when the YFC bolted out of Hanajima’s house after thinking they were cursed. The original adaptation did that gag so much better.
Samantha Ferreira: I dunno. I though the pacing on that was pretty great.
L.B. Bryant: I liked the original with them bolting out of the house at lightning speed only for it to slow down for a couple of seconds to almost freeze frame on their terrified faces heh
Samantha Ferreira: Fair enough, hehe.
I kind of liked the whole “random kid dgaf because it’s Hanajima’s house”
L.B. Bryant: hehe true
Anthony Simpson: I’m with Sam that I thought the pacing was fine and the random kid but then again never having seen the original so I don’t have any comparison between the two.
Samantha Ferreira: They’re both great in their own right
L.B. Bryant: Yeah, the new adaptation does a fantastic job with the whole episode but it’s just that one 5 second gag that I prefer the original. Other than that, I’ll totally take the new adaptation over the old.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. The fan club lead waking up in a scared stupor, followed by “STOP SCREAMING LIKE THAT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING” still makes me giggle
L.B. Bryant: Also, Hanajima apologizing to a very confused Yuki at the end of the episode was precious.
Samantha Ferreira: True that. It was a perfect way to cap off the episode
L.B. Bryant: Can’t believe we’re almost done with this season ;o;
Anthony Simpson: It only seems like yesterday that we started talking about the show.
Samantha Ferreira: Doesn’t it? All for doing season 2 when it airs?
L.B. Bryant: :raised_hand:
Very much an enthusiastic hand raise there lol
Samantha Ferreira: :raising_hand:
Anthony Simpson: :raised_back_of_hand:
L.B. Bryant: Do you think they’ll announce the second season right after the final episode or are they going to make us sweat and wait for them to announce the next premiere date? heh
Samantha Ferreira: I think so. It’ll be a 2020 airing most likely.
L.B. Bryant: sighs I don’t wanna wait until 2020 to watch more of this show.
Samantha Ferreira: Haha
Anthony Simpson: I’m guessing they will probably announce after the final episode. Got to strike while the iron is hot.
Samantha Ferreira: Could be worse. Could be Attack on Titan.
L.B. Bryant: lol
Samantha Ferreira: What was that? Four, five years?
L.B. Bryant: Something like that.
Samantha Ferreira: Aniwho… I really can’t wait to see how the series continues to truck along at this rate – it’s going to be a hype end of season, knowing what happens next
Any final words this week?
Anthony Simpson: Can’t wait to see what next week brings
L.B. Bryant: Always remember to check your closets :)
Samantha Ferreira: Hehe. I guess that wraps things up! Til next time, remember; waves are good, unless you’re dealing with the one who controls them.
Have a great night!
Anthony Simpson: Good night
L.B. Bryant: Night!
