Crunchyroll Partners With WEBTOON For Original Content Co-Productions

Crunchyroll LogoEarlier today, Crunchyroll announced that they entered a strategic partnership with digital comics publisher WEBTOON. Through the agreement, the two companies will develop and co-produce original animated titles. According to the announcement, the titles will be based on WEBTOON’s IP catalog, and both companies will collaborate on distribution, licensing, and retail of each new series.

Crunchyroll General Manager Joanne Waage commented on the news, stating:

We are extremely excited to be partnering with WEBTOON … WEBTOON has a tremendous catalogue of content and creators that resonate deeply with our audience and we can’t think of a better way to delight fans than by bringing these stories to life through animation.

In August 2018, Crunchyroll parent Ellation announced that they would open their own animation studio, known as Ellation Studios. The studio is tasked with producing original content for Crunchyroll and VRV.

Ellation Studios is currently producing original content for Crunchyroll (dubbed “Crunchyroll Originals”) and VRV. The studio’s first project is a Crunchyroll Original series titled High Guardian Spice, which was created by Raye Rodriguez.
