Funimation Adds Sakura Wars (2019) the Animation to Spring 2020 Lineup


Editor’s Note: To prevent name confusion, Anime Herald have adopted a policy of tagging Sakura Wars (1996) and Sakura Wars (2019) with their respective years of release. This will be carried forward in all materials going forward as a matter of policy.

Sakura Wars (2019) Anime VisualEarlier today, Funimation took to Twitter to announce that they will stream Sakura Wars (2019) the Animation (Shin Sakura Taisen the Animation) as part of their Spring 2020 lineup. The series will be available on the FunimationNow digital platform in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

Funimation describes the series as:

Set in 1940, it’s been 10 years since the great demon invasions, and the World Luxury Operatic Federation has designed a tournament for all to participate in! So how will that work with another impending demonic war? We’ll just have to wait and find out!

Sakura Wars (2019) The Animation will begin airing on April 3. The current premiere schedule is as follows (All times JST):

  • Tokyo MX: 4/3/2020 at 22:00 (4/3/2020 at 10:00PM EST)
  • BS11: 4/3/2020 at 23:30 (4/3/2020 at 11:30PM EST)

Sakura Wars (2019) launched in Japan on December 12, 2019. The title, which is available on Sony’s PlayStation 4 console, sold through 166,771 as of January 13, according to Famitsu. Sega will release the game worldwide on April 28. The first run of the title will be packaged as a “Launch Edition” that includes a reversible cover and a sticker sheet.

Project Sakura Wars The Animation VisualManabu Ono (Sword Art Online: Alicization, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere) will direct the project at Sanzigen and co-write the scripts with Tatsuhiko Urahata (Hi-Score Girl, GATE). Sakura Wars composer Kōhei Tanaka will score the soundtrack. Ohji Hiroi and Sega are credited with the original concept.

The confirmed voice cast includes:

Sega describes Sakura Wars (2019) as:

The stage is set in a steampunk version of 1940s Imperial Tokyo. Only a short while ago, a cataclysmic event destroyed the Imperial Combat Revue of Tokyo, the capital’s global defense force stationed at the Imperial Theater. Now home to the Flower Division, an inept rookie squad who also strives to impart hope on the citizenry with their theatrical talents, the theater has fallen on hard times and risks closure. It’s up to Seijuro Kamiyama as the captain of the new Tokyo revue to lead his squad and restore the Imperial Combat Revue and the theater back to their former glory! With the help of the revue’s five colorful performers, he must rise to the challenge of competing in the Combat Revue World Games, protecting the inhabitants of Tokyo and getting the theater back on track.
