Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club! I’m Samantha, and I’m here with Anthony

Anthony Simpson: Evening

Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’re here to discuss Sakura Wars (2019) the Animation, episode 10: “With Regards to Independence Day”

And this… was a big week. For long-time fans, it was a chance for one last hurrah for the classic Kobu, and a cameo appearance for series icon Sakura Shinguji

Anthony Simpson: It nice to see the classic Kobu again one last time

Samantha Ferreira: It really was. And the way it went down was just… a nice “blaze of glory” kind of finish It went down, but it took more than a few robots out with it

More than that, though, we got to see that Kaminsky is now at “extra” on a scale of 1-10 with regards to how evil he is.

Anthony Simpson: He is at the irredeemable point of evil now

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah… I thought he was a week ago, really. Now it’s just “OK, we’re using a small child as a battery in our death laser”

That said, Sakura Wars is nothing if not theatrical with its villains

A blonde man kneels before a blonde girl, his palm outstretched. A blue glowing crystal floats just above his hand.

Anthony Simpson: True.

Samantha Ferreira: I’m rather curious to see how things work out now, though – especially since we saw the other Combat Revues ready for action in that final cut-away

Anthony Simpson: I would like to see the others combat revues get involved in the grand finale. I would be disappointed if they just put in there just for the sake of getting screen time

Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. I mean… I want to see the Eisenjaegers, the Shenlongs, and so on going into battle with one last united push

Anthony Simpson: Speaking of battles. I have to say I loved the idea of giant crossbow shooting our heroes into battle.

A gigantic crossbow built on the roof of a building. It's flanked by stained glass domes.

Samantha Ferreira: Right? It was delightfully over-the-top with that big Samurai Pizza Cats-ish crossbow just launching the armors into the hull of the skyhook

Anthony Simpson: It worked so well with everything we have seen so far.

Samantha Ferreira: Right? Even Hakushu just going “nbd” when Reiji was warning her that it’d probably do some damage

Anthony Simpson: That was amazing. Props for Hakushu being asked if she still needed her mask since everyone knows who White Cape really is.

Samantha Ferreira: True that. Sumire kind of lampshading at that point was great

“Do you really need it now?”

I do feel as though we’re going to see something with Leyla next week, since, well… she just watched the man she thought she loved literally use her sister as a super-laser battery

A woman with a white mask and hat holds a rapier as she looks at the camera.

Anthony Simpson: I would say either next week or the following week we will see something with Leyla

Samantha Ferreira: Her turn is going to be the big climactic twist

Anthony Simpson: It would be remissive of the series if they don’t do something with Leyla.

Samantha Ferreira: Definitely. Especially since Klara and Leyla appear to be big honkin’ sequel hooks at this point

Anthony Simpson: True

Samantha Ferreira: Any thoughts on what to expect next week?

Anthony Simpson: I expected some big fight scenes next week.

Samantha Ferreira: Likewise… I think the next couple of episodes are going to be pretty much all action at this point

Any final thoughts this week?

Anthony Simpson: Nope

Samantha Ferreira: OK, then. ’til next time, remember: sometimes, all it takes is two seconds of a famous character to drive a fangirl into overdrive.

Have a great night!

Anthony Simpson: Goodnight
