Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club. I’m Samatha, and I’m here with Anthony Simpson
Anthony Simpson: Evening
Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’re heading back to Saga to talk up Zombie Land Saga episode 8: “Zombies Say Trans Rights!”
Anthony Simpson: So while I never seen Zombie Land Saga before we starting watching for the club I knew about Lily as the show was airing.
Samantha Ferreira: Yeah… that was like… the worst-kept twist
Anthony Simpson: My twitter feed was taken up by Lily
Samantha Ferreira: Heh, same. Still, I have to admit that it they handled everything super well
Anthony Simpson: All around I thought this was a good episode. Specifically the stuff involving Lily and her dad.
Samantha Ferreira: Yeah… that still hits me right in the heartstrings
Anthony Simpson: Especially seeing now we are starting to see people from the girls past seeing them again. That itch that was started a few episode ago and now I wonder how many more we are going to see.
Samantha Ferreira: Definitely. Like we’re seeing Lily’s dad and those reporters. It’s been super fascinating to get these little slices of their lives
Anthony Simpson: That said holy shit Lily’s dad was a roidy magoo.
I really how Lily handled the second time she saw her dad with the t-shirts .
Samantha Ferreira: Dude really does look like a Yakuza tough. And same. It was just… my heart.
Anthony Simpson: He does. That or an ex pro wrestler.
Samantha Ferreira: … His head is hilariously tiny though
Anthony Simpson: Yes it is. Reminds on the old Garfield cartoon where they had Jon have a wrestling match with a pro wrestler how had a massive body who wore a face mask but when he took off the face mask he had this small head
Samantha Ferreira: That was so touching, though. The dude’s whole arc, from his introduction, to his return to watching TV, was just bittersweet
Anthony Simpson: It was. The fact that he was able to get some closure in the end really just made it so much better.
Samantha Ferreira: Definitely. The whole song in the credits just hurt, in a good way
Anthony Simpson: True.
Samantha Ferreira: Really, it was just a great one-and-done story.
That said… god, I remember the great Wikipedia Wars over this one. Where editors kept trying to downplay Lily’s being trans
Anthony Simpson: I avoided that thankfully.
Samantha Ferreira: It was astounding to see the mask come off, to say lightly. I won’t go into it, but I will say that the edit history for November 2018 – July 2019 was astounding.
Anthony Simpson: Yikes
Samantha Ferreira: Yeeeah. Props to MAPPA though for handling the subject, though. Like… in the original Japanese, Lily even goes as far as to use the term “suteta namae”, which translates to “abandoned name”/“name I threw away” / “deadname.”
Anthony Simpson: The dub does similar with Lily saying “That is what my name used to be”
Samantha Ferreira: I like it.
Any final thoughts this week?
Anthony Simpson: I’m looking forward to next week
Samantha Ferreira: If this is the one I’m thinking of, so am I.
Anthony Simpson: From the previews it looks like a Saki episode.
Samantha Ferreira: I’ll say no more. \o/
Anthony Simpson: From the previews that is what I getting.
Samantha Ferreira: I think I know which one it is. I’ll say no more. :3
But that’s all the time we have this week. Til next time, remember: not every hulking dude is a yakuza tough. Some are just sweet, sad, lonely dads.
Have a great night!
Anthony Simpson: Good night
