Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club – I’m Samantha, and I’m here with Anthony this week

Anthony Simpson: Evening

Samantha Ferreira: We’re in an all-new season, which means an all-new show! However, before we get started, I’d like to circle back to last season’s Zombie Land Saga for a sec, to chat about the finale

Anthony Simpson: So I figured Sakura would remember what she needed to do the show. Despite the show being about zombies I couldn’t see it ending with her not doing the show at all. Also was not expecting Kotaro to be Sakura’s classmate from when she was alive.

I enjoyed the call back by having all the people they helped in the past coming to the concert.

Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. It was a great moment to see them all come together like that

Anthony Simpson: That said I enjoyed the ending and the hook to start Season 2.

Samantha Ferreira: From the metal dudes, to the old folks, to Lily’s dad and Saki’s friend

And agreed.

Anthony Simpson: It was such a great call back for the show to do.

Samantha Ferreira: Indeed… I mean, it was something you had to expect, but they really stuck that landing

Anthony Simpson: They really did stuck. They stuck it with a perfect 10.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah… I’m eager to see what happens next time around, since they had that big sequel drop at the end

Anthony Simpson: They did.

Plus, I’m curious about Kotaro and seeing his motives since he was Sakura’s friend before she died.

Samantha Ferreira: Definitely. There’s a lot to unpack here

Anthony Simpson: Here is hoping we get answers in Season 2.

Samantha Ferreira: Here’s hoping Season 2 comes sooner than later, also

Anyway! Before we get too sentimental, we should get moving to the next season. This time around we’re starting off Ikebukuro West Gate Park, as a pick from our Patrons, and we’ll be talking up episode 1: “DRUGS DON’T WORK THAT WAY!”

Screenshot from Ikebukuro West Gate Park that features a blonde man wearing a black shirt that says "Smoking Kills." A young woman with brown hair looks at him skeptically.

Anthony Simpson: Oh boy. So, I checked this out a few hours ago.

So yea the drug stuff. Drugs don’t work like that. AT ALL.

Samantha Ferreira: Ohhh yeah. This feels like something you’d see in a D.A.R.E. PSA

It was so hilariously bad

Anthony Simpson: Now yes, I get that Japan and USA have very different cultural aspects on drugs. That said all I kept hearing in my head was Mr. Mackey going “Drugs are bad, m’kay”.

Samantha Ferreira: Right?

The part where they were just “OK, so they’re putting it in potpourri and selling it as that” was just amazing. Especially when they revealed it was fucking weed.

Screenshot from Ikebukuro West Gate Park that features a tablet computer, with an image of two nondescript envelopes on the screen.

Anthony Simpson: The drugs in the episode reminded me a lot of the whole with situation with Bath Salts.

Samantha Ferreira: Right? Down to the whole “losing their minds” bit

Anthony Simpson: When the police chief showed the bags, I went Bath Salts. Because that is what it reminded me. Mind you, I know Bath Salts are not weed.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah. I mean… bath salts would have made sense, given the dude was literally just going berserk in the beginning. Shoot, even cocaine would’ve made sense here.

Anthony Simpson: Considering that weed doesn’t make you go berserk. Well maybe going berserk on a bag of Doritos or some Taco Bell foods.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah.

Anthony Simpson: Even speed would have made sense.

Samantha Ferreira: True. Because good lord I lost it when it cut to the cannabis plants.

Screenshot from Ikebukuro West Gate Park that features a blonde man in a suit, who is standing in a room containing numerous cannabis plants.

Anthony Simpson: I rolled my eyes at that part.

Samantha Ferreira: I mean… to be fair, this is basically an ’80s buddy cop show

Except the cops are somehow a gang that HELPS the cops?

Anthony Simpson: I was getting GTA vibes from the description of the show myself.

I mean we have gangs that are color coded from what we can see.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah. I mean, honestly, I kind of liked that vibrant aesthetic.

Anthony Simpson: Same. I like the designs of the show. The OP is good as well.

Samantha Ferreira: It really is.And, really, the main cast is pretty likeable

Anthony Simpson: I like what we have seen of the cast so far. But other than drugs WTF was with that Fruit Ramen?

Screenshot from Ikebukuro West Gate Park that features a blonde man wearing a black shirt that says "Smoking Kills," who is smiling as he eats a bowl filled with fruits. A young woman with brown hair looks at him with a shocked expression.

Samantha Ferreira: Seriously, I’d have checked THAT dude for drugs because that is a straight-up stoner meal

Anthony Simpson: Well I mean he does like his fruit. I also like the fact that he wears a shirt that says Smoking Kills

Samantha Ferreira: Same.

I mean, I’ve come down on the show but generally, it’s been a fun “turn your brain off” type of series

Anthony Simpson: It seems to be that way so far. I mean its not to top Hypnosis Mic in that department nothing is dethroning that show.

Samantha Ferreira: To be fair

Anthony Simpson: Also, if you have watch Hypnosis Mic if you haven’t. It’s so great. So, so great.

Samantha Ferreira: Hypnosis Mic is like… that’s a freaking force of nature. It’s stupid in the best ways and gay in the VERY BESTEST ways ????

Still from Hypnosismic, which eatures a man in a red jacket posing with a microphone. He is flanked by blue and yellow projections of himself, as the word "Bullshit" is superimposed over the image.

Anthony Simpson: Its AOTS for me just on enjoyment factor alone.

Oh yes totally

Samantha Ferreira: I’m still sampling shows, but I’m kind of partial to Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle. The fact that the princess is just a shitlord gremlin and they lean so hard into that is amazing.

Anthony Simpson: I haven’t checked that out yet.

Samantha Ferreira: It’s fun.

Otherwise, though, I’m really digging this season.

Anthony Simpson: I think that might be the last show I check out for the season.

Samantha Ferreira: Yashahime’s what I expected, but it feels like a return to a simpler time… I haven’t bothered with Higurashi yet because, well… I run two websites so it’s a miracle that I’m following so many shows already. :P

Screenshot from Yashahime, which features a young woman with white hair, clad in a in a suit. Her face bears a stern expression.

Anthony Simpson: This season is really stacked for stuff I am watching. I haven’t been watching a lot of stuff this year, so this is a good remedy for me.

Samantha Ferreira: And Love Live is just outstanding, as to be expected

Anthony Simpson: Yashahime is something I will watch once I am done with Inuyashua

Samantha Ferreira: This is, to be honest, the first season in a full year where I have sat and watched more than the club shows

Anthony Simpson: I have at least 9 shows that I am watching right now.

The only stuff I put on the back burner is Moriarty since its a split core and I will watch it before the 2nd half comes out. Akudama I am waiting until its uncut

Samantha Ferreira: I’m curious about Akudama

Anthony Simpson: Same with Strike Witches Road to Berlin just wait until the uncut stuff is out.

I liked what I saw of Akudama, but DAMN is that busy AF in the 1st episode.

Samantha Ferreira: Oh?

Anthony Simpson: There is a lot going on at once.

Samantha Ferreira: I’m genuinely curious about it – might end up watching it tonight at some point

Anthony Simpson: Its good busy not bad busy

This show, K3 Bear, Akudama and Adachi and Shimamura are all what I watched today.

Sleepy Princess will be tomorrow that will probably be it for me for new stuff to check out.

Samantha Ferreira: I’m probably going to stop with Akudama, myself

Anthony Simpson: I think 10 shows for me is going to be good. That is what I used to watch in a season some time ago.

In stacked seasons

Samantha Ferreira: Truth.

Anyway, any final thoughts this week?

Anthony Simpson: I hope they don’t keep doing the drug stuff next week.

Samantha Ferreira: Saaame.

It needs more than one note.

Anthony Simpson: I never read the novels that the show is based on so I don’t know what to expect.

Samantha Ferreira: Same. So, I’m curious, regardless. At worst, we can jump over to Hypnomic and rant about the silliness

Anthony Simpson: True

Samantha Ferreira: Anyway, ’til next time, remember: When starting a secret drug cartel, don’t sell your brain-melting product as an inhalant. Edibles are far harder to trace.

(Disclaimer: Anime Herald does not endorse dealing drugs)

Have a great night!

Anthony Simpson: Good night
