The Herald Anime Club Meeting 167: Battle Athletes Victory ReStart! Episode 3

Meeting Date: 4/24/2021

Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Herald Anime Club. I’m Samantha, and I’m here with Anthony this week to talk up more Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART!

Anthony Simpson: Evening.

Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’ll be talking up episode 3: “Now with fewer butts!”

Anthony Simpson: And with fewer creeps.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeeeeah. It really felt like a lot of the creepy stuff finally got out of the team’s system this week.

Which is awesome.

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts a brown haired woman moping as she listlessly drinks from a juice box.

Anthony Simpson: Well, the one showed up at the end.

Samantha Ferreira: True.

Anthony Simpson: Speaking of that, Jeff survived his Back to the Future DeLorean blowing up.

Samantha Ferreira: That was definitely unexpected. I do wonder what that means for the plot going forward – the villains failed to kill their tail, so now we have a motivated inspector who will probably be at that school 24/7.

Anthony Simpson: I have a feeling Jeff is going to be around for a while. And the student that the creeps talked about I believe is all part of this.

Samantha Ferreira: Same. (That said: Kanata, you need to stop creeping on your sister)

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the digital ghost that keeps popping up?

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts a brown haired woman sleeping, as a staticky figure looks down upon her.

Anthony Simpson: That has something to do with that alien that Kanata met all those years ago.

Samantha Ferreira: Definitely. I’m mostly wondering more if it’s like… a Princess Leia thing or something else at this point.

Anthony Simpson: It wouldn’t surprise me.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah. That said, I kind of like it as an undercurrent – it provides a nice counterpoint to the character building… and the cast is remarkably strong, overall.

Anthony Simpson: It does.

Speaking of building, I really enjoyed the training montage we got in this episode and how we got to learn more about why the cast wants to win the Cosmo Beauty.

Samantha Ferreira: Same. I really loved watching them just cut loose and have fun through it all – you know, after Kanata got punched in the gut by a pissy kangaroo.

But generally, it was very light and breezy and incredibly charming.

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts 8-bit characters digging through a pixelated side view of the earth as they dig through with pickaxes.

Anthony Simpson: It was.

Samantha Ferreira: That dark turn was a great twist, too, where we got a firsthand look at the lunar civil war.

Anthony Simpson: I think it was just a good idea to show the war not just mention about it.

Samantha Ferreira: Agreed.

Anthony Simpson: Also, I liked how the daughter of the arms dealer family wants to stop sending weapons to the moon.

Samantha Ferreira: Same. It was a great shift for Lydia’s character.

Anthony Simpson: It was a nice development for Lydia.

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts a blue-haired woman splattered with blood, as she stands under a dark night sky.

Samantha Ferreira: It really was. I can’t wait to see how they grow together.

Anthony Simpson: Lydia is starting to grow on me now.

Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. Shelley’s still great, too.

Anthony Simpson: Shelley is still great as well.

Speaking of dark, the doctor wanting better medical facilities on her colony. Jesus, that was sad.

Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. Paglia’s story was just a gut-punch.

Like… I’m amazed it went there.

Anthony Simpson: I mean they showed people dying in a war zone so someone dying on the table isn’t too crossing the line for this show.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeaaah. I respect it, though. They did well with the delivery.

Anthony Simpson: I mean, creeps aside, last episode I do like how we are getting shown these things the cast is talking about.

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts a pink haired woman wearing glasses and a doctor's coat. She is slumped in a chair in a run-down medical office, a pained expression on her face.

Samantha Ferreira: Agreed. I appreciate how they just keep going there – they’re not afraid to cross that line and show that the world’s kind of a shitty place

Anthony Simpson: Same.

Samantha Ferreira: There’s a lot here – and I wonder if they’ll be able to build it up well with just nine episodes left.

Anthony Simpson: It is hard to say. I certainly hope they do since there is a lot of threads to cover.

Samantha Ferreira: Agreed. On a related note, I’m kind of interested in how many characters are descended from the original Battle Athletes cast.

· Shelly Wong is descended from (or related to) Ling-Pha Wong

· Lydia Gurtland descends from(or related to) Jessie Gurtland

· Yana Christopher descended from(or related to) Kris Christopher

And so on.

Still from Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! that depicts five women in leotards running through the forest. They're all gawking at something offscreen.

Anthony Simpson: Not being all up on the original Battle Athletes I didn’t notice that.

Samantha Ferreira: Yeah… I wonder if it’ll play in later, or if it’s just another easter egg

Any final thoughts this week?

Anthony Simpson: Just curious to see where things go from here

Samantha Ferreira: Same.

I guess that’ll wrap it for this week. ’til next time, remember: When in doubt, bring that kangaroo along. Have a great night!

Anthony Simpson: Goodnight
