Introducing Anime Herald’s 2024 Funding Drive

Hello and good evening, everybody.

I’m going to ditch the “Presidential Voice” that we use for the regular updates. Instead, I’d like to take a moment to be honest with you.

This year marks the seventh anniversary of our relaunch as a reader-supported publication. At that point, we did so with the intention of making Anime Herald an ad-free publication that pays its writers and editorial team fairly. And, over the past few years, we’ve worked to embody that ideal, as we’ve grown gradually and attempted to keep our expenses low while dedicating the lion’s share of our payments toward our team and the writers with whom we work.

We’re in a good place now, thanks to that. We’ve finally reached a point where we’re publishing twice a week on a regular basis, and we’re paying everyone $50 per article for their work. We’re not quite breaking even every quarter, but we are close.

The Fund Drive

This month, we’ll be making a drive to do the following:

  • Break even on our financial costs
  • Raise our rates by 50%, for both our team and the writers we work with
  • Add a new monthly feature or article series to Anime Herald

In that order.

To reach these goals, we’ll need to raise the following:

  • Break-Even: $500
  • Pay Raise: $850
  • New Article Series: $1,000

In more practical terms, our most popular subscription, according to our backer wall, is the $5 Discord Tier. To reach our $500 break-even, we just need 30 people to subscribe at that level. We need 100 backers at the Discord tier to reach the pay raise.

For a new article series, it would be 130 backers.

Pride Month Donation Drive

In addition to our subscription drive, this month’s efforts will be part of a greater donation drive. Specifically, I’ll be donating to The Trevor Project in Anime Herald’s name, equal to the total we raise through Patreon and Ko-fi this month, up to $800.

As a publication owned and operated by a trans woman, which has numerous LGBTQIA+ team members, and works with many LGBTQIA+ writers, this means a lot to me. Pride is a time for those of us in the community to offer each other support, and I prefer to do something that does real good in the world, rather than just putting on a smile and rainbow-washing for a month.

The goals I’ve put forth are bold, for sure, but they’re not impossible. If we can reach our goals, we’ll be able to make Anime Herald a bigger, better publication that can better provide for the folks who make everything possible, and better serve you, as a reader.

And, more importantly, we can do real good for LGBTQIA+ youths during Pride.

Thank you for reading this through to the end. If you’re not a subscriber, I urge you to support us, and independent anime journalism, as a whole. If you are a backer, you have my undying gratitude, and I hope that we will continue to bring you the very best as we continue forth this year.

Though the current landscape is terrifying, we can continue to weather the storm, and even thrive, with your help.
