Azumanga Daioh Director Launches Chika Chika Idol Kickstarter

Symphonium inc. and Hiroshi Nishikiori (A Certain Magical Index, Azumanga Daioh) kicked off the KickStarter campaign for Chika Chika Idol. The feature, which will be directed by Nishikiori, launched a two-pronged crowdfunding campaign. United States are able to contribute via Kickstarter, while Japanese fans can back the project via Makuake.

Chika Chika Idol is an original CGI anime project, which revolves around the lives of “underground idols.” The confirmed voice cast includes:


  • Tenka Akasaki: Marika Kono
  • Sumi Yuki: Yuki Kuwahara
  • Abigail Williams (Abbey): Rika Tachibana
  • Hisame Nagasawa: Ayane Sakura
  • Yataro (Cat): Yuri Yamaoka

Reward tiers include digital downloads of the feature ($25), as well as Blu-Rays ($55). As of press time, the Kickstarter has earned $654 of its $130,000 goal.

Tokyo, February 22, 2016 | Director of A Certain Magical Index and Azumanga Daioh, Hiroshi Nishikiori, will be launching a Kickstarter for the anime “CHIKA*CHIKA IDOL” on February 23, 2016 at 10:00AM JST (8:00PM EST).

The idol anime follows the everyday lives of a group of “underground idols” and features the high energy performances of a live idol concert. The 3D digital animation short film uses cel-shading CG technology to achieve hand-drawn quality.

The Kickstarter project marks the second half of the campaign which is currently live on the Japanese crowdfunding site, Makuake.

The Japanese pop culture experts at Tokyo Otaku Mode will be collaborating on the Kickstarter project by helping promote the project and delivering rewards.

Rewards for the project include a digital download of the anime for $25 and a special edition Blu-ray package for $50, and Supporter Sets for each of the idols with T-shirts, scarf towels and solo music tracks.
