Disclaimer: The Herald Anime Club discusses shows as they’re airing. Naturally, there will be spoilers for a given episode. You have been warned!
Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club! I’m Samantha, and this week I’m here with L.B. Bryant and Anthony Simpson
L.B. Bryant: Hello!
Anthony Simpson: Evening
Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’re going to be talking up Fruits Basket episode 24: “The season finale before the season finale.”
L.B. Bryant: I do not envy the next show we watch for the anime club. It’s going to have some big shoes to fill.
Samantha Ferreira: That’s like saying The Super Bowl is a big sporting event, lol
Anthony Simpson: I don’t envy the next show we have to do either. I mean how do you follow up from Fruits Basket 2019 edition?
Samantha Ferreira: Joking aside, no matter what, we’re going to need a borderline masterpiece to follow this one up
L.B. Bryant: Indeed.
So Anthony, what did you think of the big reveal of Kyo’s true form?
Anthony Simpson: Creepy is all I will say.
Samantha Ferreira: They went all-out with the body horror there
L.B. Bryant: Indeed.
Anthony Simpson: I can see why his Kyo’s mom kept him in the house now.
Samantha Ferreira: Yeeeah. They really dialed that up to eleven, here.
Like… they went all in with the repugnance factor down to the “he reeks”
Anthony Simpson: I did like that touch. Not only does he transform into something out of a survival horror game he has a foul odor as well.
I mean could they have just left it at he looks scary. Sure, but this was a additional touch just to show how monstrous he true form is.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. He’s just repulsive to all senses.
Anthony Simpson: On thing I do have to say about Kyo’s true form. I though he would have injured Tohru more he hit her into the shallow pond.
L.B. Bryant: That’s a fair point to make
Samantha Ferreira: I chalk that up to artistic license, really.
Anthony Simpson: That sounds like a good way to think about it. I mean he made part of the mountain area collapse so…
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed.
I mean… they really amped up his power in ridiculous ways at points.
At the same time, though, they were just clear in showing that he was literally detested by everyone around him. Like… even his mother checked his wrist a dozen times a day
Anthony Simpson: With his mom that fits what they said before about mothers of children of the Zodiac.
Samantha Ferreira: It really does
Anthony Simpson: She is repulsed and over protective of him.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. And she definitely does show the depression
Anthony Simpson: So outside of Kyo’s true from we were introduced to Kazuma.
We also see first hand Kyo’s relationship with him since he refers to him as Shisho instead of Shihan.
Samantha Ferreira: Indeed. There’s layers upon layers, here.
Anthony Simpson: I mean Shihan Soma would be officially how he would be referred to since he is the Chief Instructor and owner of the dojo.
Where as Shisho Soma would be more or less Master Soma.
Depending on his dan rank he would likely have a different title either Renshi or Kyoshi.
Samantha Ferreira: Interesting
Anthony Simpson: This is the martial artist in me coming out.
L.B. Bryant: In the dub they just refer to him as master
Anthony Simpson: That would be an accurate translation.
At least for Shisho. Shihan is irrelevant to rank.
Samantha Ferreira: Makes sense
So, we have one more episode apparently, given the teaser at the end. What do you expect from it?
Anthony Simpson: I’m not sure exactly.
L.B. Bryant: I just hope they don’t end it on any sort of cliffhanger
Samantha Ferreira: Narrator: They will
Aniwho, any final thoughts this week?
Anthony Simpson: Can’t wait to see what next week brings.
L.B. Bryant: Me too
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise!
And we’ll be here to discuss it when that happens. Til next time, though, remember: Giant cat monsters can send you flying twenty meters. Please, keep your distance.
Have a great night!
Anthony Simpson: Good night
L.B. Bryant: Night
