Samantha Ferreira: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Herald Anime Club! I’m Samantha, and I’m here with L.B. Bryant and Anthony Simpson
Anthony Simpson: Evening
L.B. Bryant: Hello
Samantha Ferreira: Tonight, we’ll be talking up Ascendance of a Bookworm episodes 13 and 14: “How ’bout the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away… with MIND BULLETS!”
Anthony Simpson: Note to self don’t mess with Main’s family she is will crush you.
L.B. Bryant: I know that I’m standing alone on this one but I really enjoyed these last two episodes. Lots of good little moments added up to a satisfying conclusion for me.
Samantha Ferreira: I couldn’t take it seriously once the priest went cartoonishly evil, then Main began straight up crushing his heart with psychokinesis. At that point, something just snapped and I started howling with laughter. I think I woke up my roommate.
L.B. Bryant: There were some hiccups along the way that I strongly disagreed with (such as the situation with Frieda) but overall, this was a solid first season for me.
Anthony Simpson: Well the High Priest is nobility and they made it obvious how he feels about the commoners.
Samantha Ferreira: Yeah, but… there are better ways of doing that than a straight-up WWE heel turn. Like, they didn’t even mention the reality of the social strata until RIGHT BEFORE that scene
Anthony Simpson: To each their own I guess.
Samantha Ferreira: When they’ve shown the church a few times, and could have easily shown their darker tendencies coming through during those. It was just “Yup, Nobles will flat out murder you” all of a sudden, when before they at least tried to have a veneer of believability with the whole “Some noble must have needed money and hocked his book” in episode 1
Anthony Simpson: Well I can see where you are coming from.
Samantha Ferreira: To be honest, I shouldn’t be too hard on the section. That was the most fun I had the series because it was so off the wall and unexpected.
Anthony Simpson: I wasn’t expecting Main to straight up nearly murder someone because they wanted to hurt her family.
Samantha Ferreira: I wasn’t expecting her to do it by literally crushing the man’s heart with magical mind bullets
Anthony Simpson: None of us were.
L.B. Bryant: Yeah but it was pretty awesome for me to see Main become a murdering badass for a few minutes heh
Anthony Simpson: So not only does Main jump the tech base she can crush you with her Mana.
Samantha Ferreira: Also, she now owns a company so she can enter the tycoon game. Season 2 is looking up for her.
Anthony Simpson: exactly. So I have to wonder what the revolt was that led to the amount of nobles being reduced?
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. There are so many threads to this show that just don’t get chased down
Anthony Simpson: I wonder if those threads are going to be answered in Season 2.
Samantha Ferreira: I’d assume some will, for sure
L.B. Bryant: I’m really curious to see where the series goes in season 2
Anthony Simpson: I might consider checking out the LN in the future just to see the differences between them and the anime.
Samantha Ferreira: I think I’m done with this one, personally. It’s not for me
L.B. Bryant: Understandable.
Anthony Simpson: I will probably check out Season 2 but not as it is airing. Probably watch it after its finished.
L.B. Bryant: spring is going to be pretty awesome between this and fruba returning
Samantha Ferreira: Also Sakura Wars
L.B. Bryant: Truth.
Samantha Ferreira: Spoiler: We know where my vote for the season will go there :p
L.B. Bryant: lol
Samantha Ferreira: lol
Anthony Simpson: lol
Samantha Ferreira: Hey, fangirl’s gonna fangirl. Any final thoughts this week, before we say goodbye to the world of bookworms?
L.B. Bryant: Nopes, I’m good.
Anthony Simpson: Not my favorite of this season or this year for that matter. Not something I’m going to add to my collection when it gets released.
Samantha Ferreira: Likewise. So I guess now, we close the chapter on this series before moving to the Winter 2020 hype. Til next time, remember: “if you can’t innovate, use mind bullets.”
Have a great night!
L.B. Bryant: Night
Anthony Simpson: Night
