Ghostbusters: The Anime Would Be Pretty Awesome

The Ghostbusters have become a basic staple of pop culture since their 1984 début. What began as a sci-fi comedy by Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis quickly blossomed into a rich franchise that would capture the hearts and minds of generations of fans. At the property’s peak, Peter, Egon, Ray, and Winston could be found everywhere, from toys, to cartoons, to even a few video games.

What we never saw, though, was a Ghostbusters anime series. The characters have made cameos, mind you, like Ray and Egon’s appearance in last year’s Tokyo ESP.

But a full-on anime series? Never happened. One has to wonder, though. How would a Ghostbusters anime turn out, were it made in the franchise’s prime? YouTube channel Nacho Punch decided to explore the idea in a delightful 1-minute short that recreates the classic “Stay Puft Marshmallow Man” scene. This time, things are a bit… different.

It’s silly, it’s offbeat, and it works.

This isn’t Nacho Punch’s first crack at giving western properties that Eastern flair. Last year, the group re-imagined Harry Potter as a 1980s cyberpunk show, with surprisingly good results!
