State of the Herald 2023: Moving Forward To Gain Two

My fellow anime fans, good evening.

it’s hard to believe, but Anime Herald is just a few weeks away from its thirteenth anniversary. It’s an auspicious anniversary, for sure, but I promise that our thirteenth year of operations has been met with anything but ill fortune. On the contrary, we’ve been hard at work bringing some of our strongest articles to date. We’ve worked with dozens of writers this year, to bring about dissections of Chainsaw Man, explore the history of Newtype USA magazine, and answer the question of why there are so few hockey anime, among many other topics.

And, as we enter our fourteenth year, I’m positive that we’ll continue to bring you even more articles that explore the depths of anime and fandom. But, more than that, we’re preparing to enter Anime Herald’s next chapter.

So What Comes Next?

In our last State of the Herald, we mentioned that our new logo and mascot design were the first step of a much larger project. I’m pleased to announce that we’ve officially broken ground on a full, ground-up redesign of the Anime Herald website. We’ve enlisted the aid of designer Katy Castillo and developer Chris Brailsford to create a bespoke style that’s as attractive as it is functional.

If you’re worried about their bona fides, I’d like to assure you that there’s nothing to worry about. Castillo is the editor-in-chief and owner of Yatta-Tachi, who has been serving the anime community with guides, release calendars, and more since 2015. Moreover, she designed our current logo, which we rolled out last year. Brailsford, meanwhile, is Yatta-Tachi’s Head of Operations. They’re an incredibly talented team, with years of expertise in crafting accessible, efficient, and attractive website designs.

Moreover, they have their roots firmly planted in the greater anime fan community, and we have a positive working relationship. We’re genuinely excited to work with them again, and we’ll share more details as they become available.

Beyond the redesign, we’ve read through the feedback that you offered in our reader survey earlier this year. One of your most pressing concerns was the frequency of the articles we’ve posted. I’m happy to confirm that we are working with talented writers to develop a regular series of articles that we can publish alongside our current offerings.

We’re still working out the details of the format and launch, but we’ll make an announcement once we have more information available.

As this year comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to thank our team, our backers, and the many brilliant writers we work with. You all help us bring our very best, day in and day out. We literally wouldn’t be here without you. It’s your encouragement and faith that keeps us going, and I will always be genuinely grateful for your support.

Kindest regards,
