Dragon Ball Super Enters Production, July Premiere Planned

Dragon Ball Z Battle of the Gods 022 - 20140618Will this new series pass muster? Will it feature episodes upon episodes of charging? Tune in next time on Dragon Ball Super!

Joking aside (I hope), Toei Animation announced that a new Dragon Ball anime series is in the works. The new series, titled Dragon Ball Super, will be the first TV anime adaptation of the franchise since Dragon Ball GT, which aired in 1996.

The new series will be set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu. Earth is peaceful, and peace reigns across the land (for now).

Akira Toriyama will be credited as creator, and will contribute original story & character concepts. Kimitoshi Chioka (Kamisama Kazoku) was tapped to direct the series.

A team of three producers will oversee the show’s progress:

  • Osamu Nozaki (Fuji TV)
  • Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation)
  • Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.)

Both Osamu Nozaki and Goku oactor Masako Nozawa offered comments on Dragon Ball Super. Nozaki noted “while I was reading the plot I received from Toriyama-sensei, my dreams for the project began to spell. Maybe an enemy stronger than [Majin] Buu or Frieza will appear…”

Nozawa quipped: “We’ve used the word ‘cho’ (“Super”) in countless commercials, games, and the like, so the fact that the series it titled Dragon Ball Super is the best thing ever.”

Dragon Ball Super will begin airing on Fuji TV in July. The series will air on Sundays at 9:00PM local Japan time.
