Even though Ghibli’s future is uncertain, it’s clear that the spirit of the company is alive, in the most offbeat places. Recently, former Studio Ghibli animation director Yoshiharu Sato directed an animated TV spot.
The commercial, which is for Francois, a bakery in Fukuoka, highlights the company’s “Slow Bread” product line. The tone, pacing, and visual style are certainly reminiscent of Ghibli’s work.
Yoshiharu Sato is best known for his work as animator, animation director, and character designer for Studio Ghibli. Sato worked on a number of the company’s most famous works, including My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Through his career, though, Sato also worked on a number of pivotal titles that include The Dog of Flanders and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos.
Earlier this year, Sato directed another commercial for brewery Satsuma Shiranami.
