Crunchyroll Adds Nyanbo! To Fall 2016 Simulcast

Did someone say “adorable boxes?” I think I heard someone say “Adorable boxes!”

Earlier today, Crunchyroll announced that they will stream Nyanbo! as part of their fall simulcast lineup. The series started streaming today in all regions outside of Asia.

Nyanbo Visual 002 - 20160822

Nyanbo! is a spinoff (of sorts) from Kiyohiko Azuma’s Yotsuba&! (Yotsubato!). Specifically, the show is based on the cat version of Yotsuba&!‘s “Danbo” cardboard robot. As of press time, NHK hasn’t unveiled a specific crew for the project, though studio Shirogumi Inc. (Antique Bakery, Stand By Me Doraemon) is producing the animation.

Since appearing in Yotsuba&!, Danbo has become a popular character in the merchandising realm. Battery chargers, figures, cameras, and other goods have been produced based on the character. Nyanbo, in particular, received a pair of 10-figure toy lines, which shipped in November 2015 and May 2016, respectively.

Akira Iwamoto is directing and wiriting the series at Shirogumi Inc. The confirmed voice cast includes:

  • Tora: Romi Park
  • Kotora: Rie Kugimiya
  • Shiro: Yui Horie
  • Kuro: Yuko Sanpei
  • Mike: Junko Takeuchi
  • Narrator: Shinnosuke Mitsushima

Crunchyroll describes Nyanbo! as:

The “Nyanbo” are creatures with square bodies with ears and tails that came to Earth from outer space. There’s Tora, who dreams of repairing their broken UFO and returning to space, as well as his sister Kotora, the precocious Shiro, the mischievous Mike, the mysterious Kuro, and many more. All of these Nyanbos are now happily living much like cats, free-spirited and sometimes getting into trouble, in places that humans don’t know about.
