Funimation is finally completing this crazy saga of time travelers, aliens, espers, and more. Well, for now, anyway.
Earlier today, Funimation announced that they acquired the domestic rights to The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. The company will release the film on DVD and Blu-Ray in the first half of 2017.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a sequel to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime series. The title, which opened in Japanese theaters in February 2010, was directed Yasuhiro Takemoto (Amagi Brilliant Park, High Speed! -Free! Starting Days-) at Kyoto Animation. Fumihiko Shimo (Doraemon, The Brave Fighter Exkizer) wrote the film’s screenplay, while Shoko Ikeda (Sound! Euphonium, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) produced the character designs. Tatsuya Ishihara (Sound! Euphonium, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!) served as chief director.
The feature grossed 830 million yen ($7,361,921.83 USD) at the box office, becoming one of 2010’s highest-grossing anime films.
Bandai Entertainment originally released The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya in North America. They gave the film a theatrical run in May 2010, at San Francisco’s Viz Theater. Bang-Zoom! produced the English dub for the film, which hit North American retailers in September 2011.
