Ride on, shooting stars. It’s time to celebrate again!
Earlier today, Production I.G. screened the first teaser trailer for FLCL 2 & 3. The 45-second promo features a new song by The Pillows, and confirms several major staff members.
Adult Swim’s Toonami block started streaming the promo on their Facebook page. You can check it out below:
Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL, Gunbuster) is supervising the project, which features character designs by Chikashi Kubota (One-Punch Man, Corpse Princess). Hideto Iwai is writing the screenplay, and Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Space Dandy) is in charge of mechanical designs.
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Summer Wars) is credited as original Character Designer. Katsuyuki Motohiro is credited as Supervising Director.
The panel’s staff revealed that each series will run for six episodes. Both will launch in 2018, with a break between the end of FLCL 2 and the start of FLCL 3. The two titles will feature completely separate stories. A manga for FLCL 2 is in the works, though no details have been revealed for the adaptation.
Adult Swim describes the new title as:
In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
It was previously reported that the titles will be a sequel to the original FLCL. FLCL 2 was slated to launch in late 2018, while FLCL 3 would début in early 2018.
